Growing Up Unvaccinated

"I am the 70s child of a health nut. I wasn't vaccinated. I was brought up on an incredibly healthy diet: no sugar til I was one, breastfed for over a year, organic homegrown vegetables, raw milk, no MSG, no additives, no aspartame. My mother used homeopathy, aromatherapy, osteopathy, we took daily supplements of vitamin C, echinacea, cod liver oil..

I had an outdoor lifestyle; I grew up next to a farm, walked everywhere, did sports and danced twice a week, drank plenty of water. I wasn't even allowed pop; even my fresh juice was watered down to protect my teeth, and I would've killed for white, shop-bought bread in my lunch box once in a while and biscuits instead of fruit like all the other kids. We only ate (organic local) meat maybe once or twice a week and my mother and father cooked everything from scratch - I have yet to taste a Findus crispy pancake and oven chips were reserved for those nights when mum and dad had friends over and we got a "treat."

As healthy as my lifestyle seemed, I contracted measles, mumps, rubella, a type of viral meningitis, scarlatina, whooping cough, yearly tonsillitis, and chickenpox, some of which are vaccine preventable. In my twenties I got precancerous HPV and spent 6 months of my life wondering how I was going to tell my two children under the age of 7 that mummy might have cancer before it was safely removed.

Anecdotal evidence is nothing to base decisions on. But when facts and evidence-based science aren't good enough to sway someone's opinion, then this is where I come from. After all, anecdotes are the anti-vaccine supporter's way. Well, this is my personal experience. And my personal experience prompts me to vaccinate my children and myself."

I have a quick story about the the flu vaccination. Both my children are flu vaccinated. I am not. Typical mother who puts my health last. I typically get the flu every winter severely too. This winter no different, I had chills, fever, sore throat, body aches, etc. MY CHILDREN NEVER CONTRACTED IT AND BELIEVE ME THEY SHOULD HAVE ALL MY 2 YR SON DOES IS KISS, HUG AND CONSTANTLY EATING MY FOOD WHEN IM NOT PAYING ATTENTION! Guess its not that bad after all. The flu is painful and I would never want them to feel that kind of pain.!!

Measles, mumps, rubella, viral meningitis, scarlatina, whooping cough, tonsillitis, chickenpox and precancerous HPV are all pretty common w/o vaccines.

HPV is rampant right now. Almost every kid had chicken pox when I was growing up - even my older kids all had it because it was right around the time of the new varicella vaccine and they didn't get the shot.

So, yeah, I can see her getting them.

I found this great site and they are on FB as well.

Do you just not have time to get it? Or do you have a bad reaction? I have had the flu a couple of times (once while living a foreign country) and it's so awful, I felt like I was hit by a bus and I almost wished to die or be sedated until it was over. :-( At my workplace this year they have required ALL staff from housekeeping on up to get the flu shot or you are fired. Only exception is someone who is truly allergic to the ingredients, like a co-worker of mine who has an epipen in her bag at all times.

When I was young (in the 1970s) my mom made me and my brother go to a chicken pox party, so we would be sure to get it before we started school. I was 4 and I still remember how awful it was. It was like a horror movie to be covered with the pox and then the scabs, and it was so itchy and painful. I have scars from it both emotional and on my skin. Why would anyone want their child to get that on purpose now that we have a vaccine for it?? My husband did not get the pox as a kid--- he got it in college, and said it was a severe case with the doctor visiting the house every day to keep an eye on him (he lived in a foreign country where house calls were more common). He has pox scars all over his body including intimate areas. I can't imagine how that was to a young man to go through that.

I have also had pertussis. Was hospitalized with it as a toddler. I don't remember it but my parents said I was very very sick. It triggered my asthma to start up and I suffered from lung problems through much of my childhood. To this day if I get any kind of virus it turns into bronchitis pretty quickly. I think a lot of that damage may have started with that first pertussis illness.

"As a parent, you may not like seeing your baby or child being given an injection. However, vaccination is an important step in protecting your child against a range of serious and potentially fatal diseases.

Vaccinations are quick, safe and extremely effective. Once your child has been vaccinated against a disease, their body can fight that disease more effectively if they come into contact with it. If a child isn't vaccinated, they will be at increased risk of catching the illness."

It is much better to vaccinate. In addition, too much vaccines on early age doesn't really pose any sign of health risk.:)

As others have said ... those diseases were pretty common only a few decades ago. Let's see ... I've had ...

measles, mumps, chicken pox, scarletina, severe poison ivy, and a couple bouts of tonsillitis. That was a pretty normal childhood back in the 50's and 60's. And my dad was a physician who gave us all the newest vaccines as soon as they were available.

I got my poison ivy shot series at age 7 after being covered with the stuff each summer. I got my rubella vaccine the first year it was available, too (when I was in high school). I remember pregnant women being exposed to kids with rubella having to make the agonizing decision whether to have an abortion or not because of the possible harm to the fetus. My first "nursing job" was at the age of 6 or 7, putting out sugar cubes (with oral polio vaccine to be added by Dad) for the mass distribution of the first oral polio vaccine back in the very early 60's.

That's not ancient history. I'm "only" 58.

Wow that's so sad about the pregnant women. :-( When I was pregnant with my first child in 2000, the titres showed I was not immune to this! I was fully vaccinated but this one must not have stuck. Luckily for my child, there was good strong herd immunity and I never got it. But I did make sure to get that vaccination before I left the hospital after giving birth.

Now that the herd immunity is becoming weaker, we will probably be seeing some rubella babies on my unit. It's just a matter of time.

I have a friend who puts out anti-vaccine rhetoric everyday on Facebook. I posted the "growing up unvaccinated" article on my wall and she argued me to the point that I just gave up because it was getting me too annoyed.

She honestly believes that healthcare workers are all out to poison her child in order to make big bucks from the pharmaceutical companies, etc, etc (Hey Merck! I want my commission!) She now believes that she is "vaccine injured" and every case of asthma attacks, sore throat, etc. she had as a child all stemmed from her childhood vaccinations.

Her latest is that pro-vaccine individuals can't critically think. What irritates me the most is that she has no degree, no background in science of any kind and only the most rudimentary idea of how a vaccine actually works. And yet, these are the people who have the loudest voice and are basically starting a movement of willful ignorance. I fear for the next generation.

Fear not. It only seems like there's a huge movement. The vast majority of people understand vaccination and simply don't discuss it to death.
