Growing pains?? (chronic intermittent leg pain)

Published

I need ya'lls help. I apologize up front for this being so long.

I have a student (grade 5, female) who has been diagnosed with "growing pains" - I put that in quotations because, at this point, I'm not convinced that is what is going on.

Last year this student had a PE activity restriction ALL year with no end date. Apparently, anytime the nurse or HA asked for an end date, the doctor's office just sent a renewal of the restriction. Of course, the child was seen running around at recess with no issue.

This year, she came in to the health room once, first or second week of school, for this leg pain. Walks without limp, flat affect. I think mom came and picked her up. I encouraged mom to get us a doctor's order for IBU at school (it's what mom gives at home) for exacerbation - as of yet, no meds and no order.

Thursday before last she slipped and fell down the stairs. I watched the video - her foot slipped on the edge of a step and she fell onto her bottom and slid down a couple of stairs. She came limping into the health room and after sitting down said she could no longer weight bear d/t pain. Mom came to pick her up and she has not been back to school since. I talked to mom yesterday and she said the child has been in so much pain, she couldn't get out of bed until this past Friday. Mom says she took her to the doctor and the x-rays were negative. Mom also says she had her seen by rheumatology and they said her blood work was good (she was worked up by rheum last year d/t this pain).

Have any of you dealt with this with a student (or yourself or your own child)? Do you have any resources for information ? (doctor google isn't much help) Any ideas? Am I crazy - is this how growing pains work? I thought they were more prevelent in the evenings, but, per mom, this child's pain is worse in the mornings. (chronically tardy and > 20 absences last year).

Thoughts??

Thanks!

The times I've dealt with stuff similar to this, there has never been a resolution...the student is eventually withdrawn to transfer to another district or for home schooling.

The most recent one THAT IS similar to this is the student had leukemia, underwent treatment, and is back in school today.

Any pain out of prepotion to the injury also has me squirmy and think something like complex regional pain syndrome.... esp w/ pain hx. Does the student happen to be hyper mobile

?

I was going down that road as well...

Principal and I attempted a home visit yesterday to get mom to sign the ROI, without success. No answer to the door knock or phone call. Haven't checked to see if kiddo is here today yet - if not, it's day 10 and the attendance secretary will withdraw her.

Update:

Stu was withdrawn on Friday at 10 days absent without meaningful communication from mom.

Mom brought LD in today and was promptly turned around and told LD could come back when mom produced a copy of the lease showing that they actually live where they say they live. Mom was angry because "nobody told me you were going to withdraw her" which, I know for a fact is not true. I was standing next to the principal when she left mom a voicemail telling her LD would be withdrawn if she went 10 days unexcused.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was the last time you see her again.

Doesn't your communication with mom on the 31st count as "meaningful communication" from mom? Maybe not an excused absence, because I imagine there's no MRI or Dr report... Just curious.

Do you have a copy of the MRI result? Do you think it was actually done?

Seen by Ortho?

2nd or 3rd Pediatrician?

Involve CPS? Even if student is withdrawn, this might be good to do for the child's sake.

***UPDATE***

Mom re-enrolled LD this morning with a lease that expires next month. Mom also refused to sign the ROI for me telling me the doc's office is supposed to call me today or tomorrow and she would sign the ROI "after everything gets settled".

I would tell the "office" that you need to return their call. Bet you anything her "friend" is going to call. Once a lie gets going...
