Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)
The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)
Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."
Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!
I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!
Hold up now! I am an Orthopedic surgery resident and we go out with the ICU nurses at least 1 thursday a month. It is a rare thing for there to be any animosity toward each other, and we learn from each other (Yes even the 40 year old RN can learn a thing or two from a 28 year old 2 years out of Med school) Don't get me wrong, I would have been a total failure if it wasn't for the nurses.... Just remember it is a two way street. As for the Interns and med students, anytime they they start talking bad about nurses, we just shake our head and say," Your nights will be long and painful." (and you know do it.... the 4:30 call for dry eyes, ect.)All in good fun...of course.
Hey, don't jump on me when I'm trying to DEFEND this show!!!
The nurses on MY unit (NICU) often have a problem with surgical residents, I think, which is actually why I love this show so much. I want to see the OTHER side of the coin, to better understand these people. Our own peds residents, now they're usually pretty cool, but the vast majority of us would never hang out with them outside of work - they're only with us for a month at a time, and we don't really want to mix work and pleasure. The surgical residents, on the other hand, are usually not the nicest people to us. They rush into the unit at 0600 to do pre-rounds, wake the surgical babies up, and quite often begin painful exams on the babies - completely ignoring our requests to PLEASE let us get the poor kids some Fentanyl first, usually stating that they're in a hurry and can't wait two minutes for us to get the meds. I once had a surgical resident rip a dressing off a very sick baby, tearing much of her skin off in the process. He shrugged it off and left. That's MY impression of a typical surgical resident.
So yeah, while I do like this show for the drama and insight into the life of a surgical resident, I still stand by my statement that it would be seriously strange for us to hang out with those docs outside of work.
didn't have time to read all the threads, just want to make sure everyone knows that the show has been in communication with nursing advocates, they wrote a a very weak letter "apologizing". All I know is that I said on the night of the 1st show that I would NEVER EVER watch it again and I won't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you ! Wow...weak is right. I actually got a little peeved reading it.

A friend of mine told me that last week one of the interns said when she walks in the room everyone hopes she's the nurse, I guess implying that she looks incompetent and/or stupid.
This just burns me!!!! None of our letters are having the desired effect obviously. We need to double our efforts..... :angryfire
It's silly but it's TV.
This is what i keep in mind, aside from the fact that we're talking about a show that airs after a show called "Desperate Housewives".
DH is horrible IMO, Grey's Anatomy is OK, but i think i'll stick with finding a movie to watch instead.
If i want reality, i'll go to work.
I have watched the show from the beginning, and I would say " I love it!" But when it is over I change the channel or turn the television off, because for me it is a means for entertainment. I don't think we should let a couple of comments from a T.V. show, control our feelings about our chosen profession. And if by watching the program gives someone the idea to spout the remarks, I am sure they already felt this way. We can not blame the television for the way we as human beings view society. Because we as human beings our the ones in charge of the remote, at least in my house. :chuckle
