Oh my god! I haven't posted in a long time, but I just had to post again. I'm watching the premier of Grey's Anatomy -- any of you see this?? (new show on ABC)

The Doctor, after being questioned by a nurse says, "I'm just a resident, but you take 4 years of medical school, and let me know if I'm right." (Did I quote it right?)

Then, as he walks away he says, "I hate nurses."

Then, he walks up to a female resident and mistakenly calls her a nurse and she responds, with anger and indignation, "Did you just call me a nurse?" As though it were a racial slur!

I mean, nurses have historically been marginalized in many mass media outlets, but this is amazing!!

Well, I do love working in a teaching hospital, don't get me wrong. But just saying that unless you work side-by-side with residents (especially SURGICAL residents as they're always the most cocky) you don't understand that this is really what they're like. I personally don't believe the show is knocking nurses - it's showing how surgical residents knock them, even though the nurses are usually RIGHT. Happens quite often where I work.
The more episodes of this show that I watch (Yeah, I'm hooked) the more convinced I have become it is a show about docs for docs and the public; not nurses. And as far as the ventricle puncture goes, if she had long enough fingernails, wouldn't it be possible for that type of thing to happen?

i work in an er at a teaching hospital. we're like one big family. everyone is invited to each other's functions, from docs, nurses to techs!
Aren't most of them magnet hospitals now?

Alot of my peers dont have a high opinion of doctors because of their experiences with them. One of them find that doctors seem to be distant and unsocial (dont look at you in the eye, smile, ect..) However my parents have a high opinion of nurses. It could be that there generation respected doctors more because of how they were raised. This generation may not have the same awe or respect for doctors. I dont know what do you think? In spite of the show my peers still see beyond this. Its just like the crime shows on TV. Do those detectives always dress fashionably and look that good?

I was wondering if cockiness comes from insecurity. I notice Im most cocky when Im feel my most insecure so I compensate by acting above someone else. Also the post about surgical residents. Maybe they are cocky and competitive because surgery attracts those kind of people. Anyways my main point is cockiness may stem from fragile egos.
That's true. Sometimes the appearance of being stuck up is actually because the person is timid, and has nothing to do with cockiness.

The docs in your parents' generation probably made house calls too. You don't even hear of such a thing happening anymore. I had a couple home visits from a doc for medical care when I was a teenager.

All the docs I work with make home visits.

I knew a couple of docs who used to make home visits to their bedbound patients here also. It's rare but it does happen.

Although very rare in this present age, it's awesome that they still do it where you work, Steph. My hat is off to them for sure.

Ooh, I wrote one nasty letter to ABC. I asked for a public apology, and pointed out that no one at ABC would be alive if not for the care and expertise of nurses. :angryfire
