Green stool

Does anyone know what would cause a stool to be green and 'fuzzy' looking, kind of like algae? The patient hasn't started any new meds, has no s/s of any GI disorder, not taking iron supplements. She said it just started and I had no answers as to why this would be.

Any ideas?

When both of my kids were toddlers, an upset stomach would turn their stool 'grass' green. Doc said not to worry, so i didn't.

Sometimes something with purple dye will cause your stool to turn green. My preschooler has been wanting Kool Aid lately (grape) and my hubby freaked out one day when her stool was green.

I was told this about purple dye, also. Green stool caused by grape jello :lol2:

I remember when my son was a toddler, occasionally, he would pass stool that looked like pistascio green colored ice cream. The first time it happened was at a birthday party, and we didn't know who the culprit was, but we all stared at it. A few days later, he did it again at home and I flipped out. Took him to the doctor immediately, some stool was collected, no problem discovered and since then, it had been regular dirty brown.

I often wondered what this actually meant, years later, and that is what made me come to read the responses on this thread.

My son's BM turn many different colors depending what he's been eating. I think raw (vs. cooked in a pie) blueberries/blackberries last produced this type of reaction. But his stool was rather more formed (he's 4) but still softer.

So if its not diarrhea I would think diet.

Grape soda causes stool to be green. A dark forest green if not darker to be exact. Trust me, I have kids....LOL

To echo Dianacabana, yes, black berries or blueberries will do it every time, especially in jams and Oregon Farms canned fruits...

I believe it is from swallowing too much chlorinated water. Do you swim in a pool?
