Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Thanks Prism for your post on April 3rd! It is very inspiring for me.

Recently I have been feeling like I can't do this whole school thing. I'm lucky to not be working very much, have any children (yet!), or any real responsibilities.

I think it is just the class I'm in. It's supposed to be an easy one and it is not easy for me at all. I'm finding my teacher unclear and not at all helpful. If two people tell you they are having a problem, don't dismiss them and tell them they don't have a problem. This is NOT helpful.

I keep thinking back to what my advisor said, "getting a bachelor's degree is not easy. If it were everybody would have one."

I'll also be returning to your post when I need a little boost.

Honestly, I only looked at a few schools that were in my price range, and chose GCU because my hubby got 2 Master's from there. He had a great experience, so figured I would as well. Plus, it's kind of nice graduating from a school he did since we never went to college together :p

aimeedarling,

What class is this? A class that is easy for one, may not be easy for you and vice versa, and heck, they are A LOT of work!!

Um, you tryin' to say somethin? :cheeky: :roflmao:

HAHAHA! I just saw this. Well...if you wanna join up..there is a crusty old bat society on AN.

wow, you all are great! I just read this thread for the first time and you all have made it so informative. I am getting ready to start April 21st my first class with GCU. 2 years ago I tried to start this journey and I started it at Chamberlain University. They were very expensive but otherwise good. But had to stop due to a family emergency and decided to take GE classes online through my local college to save money. Long story short, I spent a couple months this year researching colleges again and GCU appealled to me because of the 5 week classes, price was meteocre compared to others, not smothering, no tests ( I am horrible at tests- I read to much into questions). There are 2 nurses I work with who just graduated and drove to Arizona to be in graduation ceremony, so I will also have mentor at my work!:nurse: There are also a lot of nurses I work with using UTA and they are ok with it but have had many troubles with customer service or getting ahold of people in time of need. I like that if you need a break, you can start a class a week later, 2 weeks later, whatever. Such flexibility and I am just ready to get this journey started.

Tokmom, I'm in family center health promotion. It's not so much work or too much reading. I keep getting points knocked off of my assignments, DQs, and participation for not understanding the requirements.

I think I just keep panicking and making things harder for myself. I'm worried that I might not get any better at this as the topics and assignments get more challenging.

But I think I have to take some of Flames advice and just figure out what is expected of me on the first day and just give the teacher what they want!!! Plus I'm in week three so this class is almost over.

I just find it sad, that nurses have to peck at nurses with ADN's over BSN then b/m school over those that offer online classes, and profit VS non profit.

Oh tokmom, isn't that the truest, saddest observation ever. Nurses will find anything to pick on each other for, and it appears to be an age-old issue that will never go away. Picture this: It's the late 80's. I'm a young pup sitting in the orientation of my very first nursing class, about to begin my new exciting journey into my new life of nursing! Yay! We're here! We're all giddy with excitement, sitting bolt upright in our desks with our hair up in buns (mandatory back then), wearing our brand new crunchy scrub-like outfits fresh from the uniform store and those dreadful white nursing shoes from JCPenney's. I'm ready. Ready for my new life to begin. A decrepit old lady walks in (who later became one of the most respected women on my all-time list), slaps her papers down on the desk, calls us all to attention, and proclaims the following: "Welcome to nursing school. If you work, quit. Say goodbye to your families, say hello to all-nighters. This will consume your life." She said a few unmemorable things in the middle, and then stated this: "Nurses are the biggest bunch of back-stabbing b****** you are ever going to meet". No lie, that came out of her mouth within 3 minutes of my new adventure. I remember it word for word because they all started with a B. It was shocking, but I'm not sorry she said it, because at least when I got out there in the world and experienced it for myself, I knew it wasn't ME, it was the culture of Nursing. Sad to say, but I have found that Mrs. Baker was spot-on. Why? Who knows. It's like 7th grade on steroids. Pitiful.

Just curious of what made you all decide to chose GCU over other online programs? Many times, I see comments from other people on this website, discounting GCU and don't consider it a brick and mortar school, when in all actuality it is. It is often compared to U of P, which bothers me. I chose GCU because it has a ground campus, dorms and a real bookstore, lol, and is not strictly housed in an office building with a few classrooms somewhere downtown.

Some articles have gone onto say that an employer would most likely toss your resume in the circular file because it's not a 'real diploma'. How can an employer toss a resume from a brick and mortar school?

Maybe I'm hyper sensitive, but it annoys the crap out of me. My soon-to-be degree has already given me some opportunities for career advancement.

I selects GCU based on talking with past grads, current students and doing research. I had considered another online program which my wife is attending for her Masters, but due to a recent program change which no longer makes it exclusively online, the choice became crystal clear. Additionally, it doesn't hurt that my veteran status allows me to receive a reduction in the per semester rate. :)

if you have student loans--make sure u know the rules about taking breaks. I don't know them, as I am paying out of pocket--I just recall my counselor stating a few

Wow, your coworkers could have been in our earlier classes, because Pandora and I took off a few weeks so we aren't with the initial people we started with.

Maybe someone else will show up here who is starting on the 21st and you can buddy up. It's a great way to get through the CLC's!

You and Murse will be very close in your studies!

Probably catch up and pass me,lol
