Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

I know Rob. I thought the same thing. I do have to say that I only had one person truly be MIA, but she did show up on the day of submission with her part. It wasn't perfect, but not too bad, overall. I was one of the lucky ones, lol

I had 1 MIA.....But I had a heads up that he would not participate as a guy on my GCU FB group was with him......He posted in the 1st weeks DQ's...but still had not shown up in our group..I waited till Friday and asked the prof if she could contact him....She would not, as she said many dont show up until the 2nd week! OK!! I checked the class list on Monday and he was gone!! Problem solved! I confirmed with the prof..all was well! lol

Hi all, i am taking my nclex in feb then am looking to start GCU or NAU. I've talked to the GCU advisor and the program sounds great, but they are paid to make it sound wonderful. Anyone have any reasons why the program isn't great?

If i go to gcu i wouldnt be taking patho or stats, instead i would need to take 2 upper division electives or start my masters and take 2 courses from the masters program.

Nau: only transfers 90 credits, i have 98. I would need to retake 2 classes.

At both schools i would need to take 2 extra Classes but gcu i can put them towards my masters but then I'm stuck at gcu for my masters without a break. Gcu still seems like the better option, but does any one have any suggestions?

I too got to skip 2 "nursing" classes..but have to take 2 others..which I can test out of (or just take the class)

If your a strong writer, GCU is for you.....Each class is only 5 weeks in length..and almost every week there is a paper due..ranging from 750-1500 words...which is not actually that bad. And then most have a group project (CLC project) usually a powerpoint presentation....That can actually be fairly easy if u get good partners. Usually 4-5 per group---depending on class size

As well each week, you have to answer 2 Discussion Questions (DQs) and then reply to others (2 posts a day for 3 days = 6 posts)

I think it is a fairly decent program....and if ur a strong writer/researcher, u can breeze through it.

Great that ur wanting to start ASAP on ur BSN, but the first while working as a new RN can be a trying experience on certain floors. Best of luck

Gcu grad. I wouldn't call it a breeze, especially if you work full time and have a family. It can be a stressful juggling act, however, it's doable. It's the program rocket science? No. It's all theory, except stats and patho.

Papers start out at the 750-1500 mark and toward the end closer to 2000- 2500 to prepare for the capstone.

I had no issues. The program was trouble free for me, and I learned a lot. :)

Yeah, I don't think "breeze" is a word I would use, unless I'm a few brain cells short? I'm a helluva writer, and I love research, and I do NOT have kids, yet I've struggled here and there just trying to juggle it with my M-F 8a-6p job. By the time I'm done with work and shut that computer off (I work from home) and make my way to the laptop to start school, in between dinner, calls from mom "just to say hi" (90 minutes later...LOL), some nights I don't turn that dang thing off until 11pm or later. Then weekends are full of lovely papers ;). The reading assignments in some classes are, um, "lengthy" isn't even accurate description. I'm in Patho now, and I think in one week I counted 17 articles and 6 chapters on the list for just that week. So yes, it IS doable (or we all wouldn't be here), but unless I have a defect of some sort that I'm not aware of, I think it's a LOT of work IMHO. Well worth it, though  .

Maybe that was a bad choice of words, lol But I find writing papers easier to do then study for exams. And for the most part, the reading is very optional for some of the classes, as you can find the info online a lot easier. What I find sort of amusing is they say articles should be no more than 5 yrs old, but a fair # of them in the reading are much older than that, lol But if you reads the Rubric and go by that, you should be successful. I'm very fortunate that I don't work and no kids, so my life is very mellow.

I am the old Pink. What happened was that I was put into two sessions of the same class. Getting letters that I was not posting and was failing, even though I was participating in the class I was initially told I was in --Getting good marks. Then, beyond that.. there was much confusion about tuition, what I paid, what was reimbursed, etc...

Meanwhile my kitty of 20 years passed, I have adopted two new kittens. I was giving old kitty 4 meds a day and SQ fluids every two days. I would never do that again. She had been with us since my daughter's were 5 and 8....!! I just had an issue/problem letting go.

I think two things, I was not ready to start. Also, the continued issues kept convincing me I should not. Then the holidays were upon us... and I put everything on the back burner.

I have to say that overall the GCU system is decent. I was always spoken to kindly during all of the above issues. Some of it was messy and they did rise to the occasion. I do think they have an admission problem, perhaps only some experience?

It is 10 below zero, winter is upon us. I am rethinking this entire issue.

I am certain I can do this.. I just have to have the energy and time. So many of you juggle so many things. I don't have so much of that, but I am exhausted from 10 hour days, at my age. I am going to sleep on it. But if I do go back it will be GCU!

I am reading such positive things in the blog! Again, such a supportive group!

Think you are getting lots of great information here, but wanted to add my perspective. First of all it isn't a breeze, but some of us (mostly me) make it harder than it needs to be. I have trouble learning to do the work without trying to reinvent the wheel or produce work suitable for framing and display in the Smithsonian.

One thing I might suggest is to get acclimated to your eventual position before starting. I know putting off education is kind of a sore subject on Allnurses, but there are reasons. I started only after passing the NCLEX and being a nurse for 2 months or so. This has been really hard because being a new nurse is difficult and stressful. There is such a learning curve when you start, it produces a fair amount of stress and exhaustion.

I do commend you on continuing, and will not suggest you hold off. I just want you to think of reality for a moment. I would pick GCU again, maybe not the CLC group projects ;) . Every program will have its problems and drawbacks. Pick the one that fits into your life and career dreams. GCU did it for me.

Oh, and I forgot. The advisor I talked with on the phone made it sound all wonderful and kind of reminded me of a used car salesman. This worried me a lot! I did take the dive and was okay with it.

The problems I have had are my problems, not GCU's problems! :) :0 :)

1 reason why I went with GCU was they were 1 of the few schools that did not hound me like a used car salesman, lol Others kept phoning, emailing me, was crazy! But I guess it all depends on who is looking over ur case.

Same here, they didn't hound me, but he sure had slick sales pitches. I have heard the same pitches when buying a used car, furniture, washer and dryer, and switching my cable television service.

All I did is roll my eyes, but he couldn't see that could he?
