Graduation Hold

Anyone else in this situation? I am supposed to graduate in December. I have a balance due on my account due on my account because my husband lost his job and we are basically struggling at the moment. I will not be able to pay off this amount prior to graduation. I will be able to pay it off the first week in January. Because of this my transcripts will be held. My question is will this prevent me from taking my NCLEX until May since I won't "graduate" on time. I can't get a straight answer from the Business Office at my school and my nursing office is closed today due to weather. I am sick over this. Anyone else have this happen or know someone who did?

If they will release your transcripts as soon as your balance is paid, you should be good to go, I would think. You have met the requirements to graduate from an academic standpoint. Is there anyone who can help you out by loaning you the money? So frustrating, I am sorry!! :(

I have tried everything. It just is not happening. I am just not going to be able to pay until January 4. I just don't want this to keep me from working until May. I have already accepted a job that will start after I pass my NCLEX. This is killing me, but there is no other way to do it.

Have you talked to the registrar and/or financial office about your situation? Clarify with them what paying in January will mean as far as graduation and eligibility to sit NCLEX. My guess is that everything will be fine and transcripts will be released as soon as you pay off your balance but you may get some reassurance if you talk to them directly about their policies.

Could you transfer the balance to a credit card, and then pay that off in January? Could you get a short-term loan from your bank?

I would only do this if you are 100% certain you will have the money in January.

You should be fine to take the NCLEX when the hold is removed from your account. Just make sure you follow up with the nursing dept so they see the hold is gone.

If you have to have transcripts in order to test, then you have to clear the balance due. No ifs, ands, or buts.

This is common practice at any college or university. Any balances owed to the college and this will cause you to not get transcripts until the balance is paid. In some cases, you cannot even be "officially graduated," but this varies.

I graduated from a university (non-health care degree) and I actually knew a person who "graduated," but was not issued a diploma because they owed $12.00 in lab fees because something was missing from their chemistry locker! Yeah, no joke. We all laughed about this, but it sure wasn't funny to the person it happened to.

Colleges do not play around when it comes to owing fees!

They said there was nothing they could do to help. The person I talked to was no help at all. All she said was that the hold would be lifted as soon as I paid.

We don't have credit cards. Never have. We pay cash for everything and pretty much have zero credit. Our bank denied me a loan because of that.

I know the school will hold my transcript. I wouldn't ask them to release them early. I just want to know if when I pay it the first week in January if they will release my transcript to the BON or if this will push back until May when they release those graduates. Also wondering how long it will delay my ATT if I go ahead and pay all the fees so that it is all ready to go as soon as they get the transcripts.

Besides just for this, I'd highly recommend getting a credit card. You don't actually have to use it, but just having a credit card that you occasionally put a small purchase on and pay off could do wonders for your credit. I am almost 19 years old and have almost an 800 credit score (even with $25k in student debt). Besides the boost to your credit score, you could put this expense on the credit card and pay it off as soon as you have the money. Then you don't have to worry about delays. And since you're still technically a student, you could probably qualify for a student credit card. If you want to try for one, PM me. I have an affiliate link with Discover where I can get you a $50 statement credit.

How much of a payment are you talking about? And what exactly are the testing dates?

If you can only test Dec/May and you get delayed until May, you're talking about a 5 month difference which depending on the pay on your area could be $25,000 -$30,000 in lost pay.

You say you can't get a loan - but surely someone can help you out especially knowing you have a join lined up? Do you have a church, or know of elderly people who are looking for a better return on their money than standard rates of interest?

Honestly, that would be a last resort kind of deal. We don't agree with credit cards. We built our home after our first child and paid for it as we went so when we moved in it was 100% paid for. Our cars were all bought with cash. My tuition is the only thing we do payments for.

I owe the school $2500. Not chump change by any means. Testing is anytime. My question is really when I finish the program in December, am I don't to the point that i am graduated from the program. I plan to make the payment first thing on January 4th when the payment comes to my account. I will have the Pearson Vue paid and the state paid. All the school will have to do is send my transcripts. I am not sure whether they will send my transcripts when I pay or will they hold them for an additional semester. I am ok with them holding them until I pay. I get that. I am just concerned that they will hold them until May.
