Hello everyone! I am new to this forum and am in looking for some much needed guidance. I am currently a pre nursing student trying to figure out what i want to do. i would really like to get my BSN and go on to CRNA school. at the moment, i have a 2 year old little girl, i am thinking of getting my RN first and trying to do the rest while working.
question is, what is the minimum GPA to get accepted to an RN program or a BSN program? if you are already in a nursing program, what was your GPA? I currently have all my pre req.'s finished plus a few extras that are related to the medical field htat were not required (i figured it wouldn't hurt) and i have a GPA of 3.360. is this a GPA that i can get into a program with? i just mailed out 4 applications for different schools, YSU being the one BSN program that i applied to. does anyone know if i am qualified for this program?
thanks so much!

YSU, is that Youngstown State? I think every school is different. I know that here in the Detroit area, many programs aren't taking anyone under 3.5 and I have heard that Wayne State is not taking anyone with less than a 3.9 in math and science, but that could be apocryphal.
You should probably talk to an advisor.

Most have a 3.0 minimum from what I've seen, but over that is definitely ideal. I applied to a BSN program last year with a 3.26 and didn't get accepted. I transferred to the school anyway and I'm applying again this year. Above a 3.5 is considered a "competitive" gpa, but I think it would be good for you to hear from people from the schools you're interested in.
how do i find out the average GPA that is getting accepted into the programs? can i call and find out? would they even tell me that kind of information?
I had a meeting with mine to discuss how my credits would transfer and everything and they just mentioned the information, but I'm sure you could ask what a competitive gpa would be. I also heard it from other students too.

I think your GPA sounds fine, you'll be able to get in somewhere.

You need a minimum 3.5 for the BSN program at the University I applied to, but I hear the average for acceptance is much higher (~3.8 or so). They are willing to consider a lower GPA is you have a stellar essay. I have heard of programs that don't even consider GPA but are done by lottery only. Don't give up, it all depends on the school. Good luck!!
BTW - they wouldn't reveal the average GPA during the info session. They want those with a lower GPA to still apply...again, its the essay they really look at.
from their website, it says minimum GPA of 2.7. i have to be accepted into the college itself then apply to the nursing program. i have no worries about the college itself, it is the nursing program that i am getting nervous about. they did not ask for an essay. should i write one anyway?

Getting accepted has nothing to do with the minimums posted on a website. Also, some schools go by overall GPA and others by the GPA of the pre-reqs alone. Usually there is an aptitude test you have to take as well. I had a 2.7 overall GPA (from my EE courses 25 yrs ago.). My pre-req GPA is 3.7. I scored in the 98th %ile on the aptitude test. I will finish term 2 of NS on Monday.
At some schools you could be out of the running at 3.9! It has everything to do with the school itself. BTW, my school posts that you need a 3.0 for NS and nothing less than a "C" on pre-reqs. If you applied with that....you most likely wouldn't get in!

different schools, different requirement
my school accepts 2.5 GPA and higher but of course, someone applying with a GPA of 4.0 will be accepted first.
u did the right thing by applying to different schools. that would really boost ur chances.
and as for my GPA, it stands at a 4.0 although i'm not in the program yet. i'll begin in Jan 2010.

With my school all they said you needed to apply was : A 3.0 GPA overall, a 3.0 on science courses and at least 16 credits completed science pre-reqs (Chem, Bio, pharm, patho) the likes.... However they did say preferecnes are given to residents and i heard from someone that preferences are given to their students.....
The school will set the minimum requirement but the field and curve will be set by the applicants with the seats going to the applicants with the best GPA, test scores and essays, etc. Every school has different emphases as well...some place a high emphasis on a good essay.
