Got kicked out of an RN program don't know what to do

I got kicked out of an RN AAS program 3 weeks ago, six weeks before graduation. I was supposed to graduate on june 12th and on april 17th I failed pediatric nursing. This is my second failure, I repeated fundamentals and therefore I'm not allowed to continue, the school has a rule of one repeat allowed. I'm so lost, invested so much in this and studied so hard, can't sleep, can't eat, can't face my family who was counting on me. Does anyone know of an option where I don't have to start over, a school that will take my nursing courses. I'm not an LPN, I'm a Nurse Tech (Fancy for CNA in hospital) in an emergency room in NY for 4 years now. Please help.

You have completed more than half of the RN program. This qualifies you for the Excelsior College nursing program. Check out their website, call them up, and get the ball rolling: http://www.excelsior.edu.

I'm glad you looked that up for her. I know they change every so often who qualifies and who doesn't. Good program. We have several nurses at work that finished the program (LPN - RN).

I too was just dismissed from my program one week before graduation - when I got a C- in Med Surg. It really sucks all the time and money that has been spent on this. Monday I am sending my transcripts to Excelsior. I am also meeting with an LPN program that will often format their program for those who are in my situation.

I am very frustrated though. If it weren't for NCLEX pass rates, I think they would be a lot more helpful to their students. I was SO close, and I studied like mad for the final, but was way to Anxious when I got there that my brain was not functioning. hopefully excelsior will pan out ok for me. They say it will take at least 6 weeks for them to evaluate the transcripts - I really want to know what all I am going to have to do. I am also very afraid of the CPNE. But, I guess I can study everyday for that and that will be better than going to clinicals AGAIN.

But this situation is terrible - I know how horrible you feel right now. Good luck figuring it all out.

We think that the new grading system should have started off with the new students and we should have been grandfathered in with the old system.
That I disagree with; if the standard's worth applying to anybody then it's worth applying to everybody.

In anticipation that Excelsior won't give you credit for your nursing courses, you can prepare for and take the first nursing exam while you are waiting for their evaluation. Download the study guide from the website. Obtain the study resources that are recommended if you don't want to use your nursing texts from school. Check out some of the study resources available on ebay and in the files sections of the excelsior nursing groups on yahoo, and the material available on http://www.flashcardexchange.com. You will see how the exam is and can be preparing for the next exam by the time six weeks have gone by, if it even takes that long. They evaluated my transcripts in less than three weeks. Good luck with EC.

Yes that is okay you think that, but we all signed a nursing contract from the book with the grading system printed in it. We were never made aware of the new rules until we started a new semester. After all, a contract is a contract.

First, I'm so very sorry that happened. Don't give up if you really want this!

Second, check out the req's in your state: in mine, depending on the school you go to, after the first year of RN you are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN. Most peole who fail out that close to RN graduation go on and take their NCLEX and work as an LPN until they can get into an RN bridge program (just 2 semesters).

Third, just last week Excelsior launched the nations first 100%, from scratch RN program  Its not an LPN bridge, just a two year RN program, but you may get credit for your first year, kwim?

Like April&Em I was under the impression that after a year of succesfully completing an RN program you are able to sit for the NCLEX-PN...

I really feel for you, I can't imagine going that far and not being able to graduate...don't give up though, I can't tell you how many excellent nurses I've met who have told me that they have failed out or dropped out of their first shot at nursing school.

OP states she lives in NY. NY does not allow people to sit for LPN license exam after completing half of RN program.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Whatever you do please don't give up on your dream.

This is one of the reasons I chose the LPN-RN route. Some people fail the RN program and have nothing to fall back on. With me getting my LPN first, when I do start the RN program and God forbid I do fail at least I can have my LPN to fall back on.

Can you sit for your PN -nclex in the mean time?

I'm sorry this happened to you, hopefully some of the other options will work out for you.

I can see the 100% on a meds test, however, let me tell you how my school grades, you must show all your work, and all work must be labeled correctly, I lost 5 points once because I left off ml/hr in the work although my answer was correct and correctly label as ml/hr, also you lose points if you go one decimal place to much in your work so you have to constantly watch your division and multiplication, I also once lost 10points shading a syringe, I went a smidge over the line, sorry I didnt know it was a coloring test, I am going into my final semester and only saw one 100 on a pharm test, so we would all be out.
