Going to NYU's 15-month accelerated program

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi,

I will be moving to New York from Oregon to begin the 15-month accelerated program at NYU. I love New York and I almost went to NYU four years ago. I wish I knew more about the school of nursing and the program though. Of course, I am just excited to be so much closer to becoming a nurse. In Oregon, the competition is ridiculous. It's like applying to medical school. Even though NYU is super expensive, the program is so much shorter than anything around here and the sooner you get to work the less expensive the program really is.

So, I am trying to find out more about it. Does anyone know how many students got in, or better yet, is there anyone else out there who also plans to begin the program in September? I haven't gotten my packet of information yet so I really know NOTHING about the program except what is on the website (which is not very much). Any information would help my curiousity.

Hello,

I'm in the NYU 15-month accelerated nursing program. I just came back from the NYU's nursing orientation. I'm sooo tired because we did so much today. It started with breakfast......introduction......registration.......lunch.......more registration or get you photo ID (a lot of walking :crying2: )......order your name tag.......information fair (various representatives from the university...a lot of goodies).....finally, a tour to college of nursing (or campus tour, optional). Although, I saw a lot of people left after registration. Personally, I think 9am to 5pm is too long but I guess they want us to get to know each other. Overall, it was very informative and nice to meet the administrative people and your future classmates. I hope you will enjoy your orientation too :) If you have any question(s), p/s let me know!

That's good to hear. I will be 23 when I start the program, but I chose NYU over a traditional program here in Oregon because, not only is it shorter, but everyone in the accelerated/direct entry program will have a bachelor's degree and a bit more life experience. The programs here are so competitive to get into, most people focus on nothing but taking the prerequisites and getting A's. I didn't want to get into another environment like my A&P classes where everyone has tunnel vision. I am excited about being a nurse and going to a respected program, but I am also looking forward to meeting some interesting people while I'm at it.

:Melody: Hello! It's good to see other people pursuing programs in NY. I currently attend CSI (College of Staten Island). I have a 3.8 GPA and didn't get into the program, it's way to competitive! What can you tell me about NYU and it's program? I may look into that. I have only been in NY for 6 months and of course still don't know anyone or anything about any of this...lol. I am 29 and a bit sick of going to college for eternity!! I want to get on with it! Thanks for any and all input in advance!

Hey, so can someone update the rest of us about how you all are doing in the program so far? My friend actually went to the NYU program but she got two C+ and was kicked out.

Is she in the 15-months accelerated nursing program? I just started 2 weeks ago and I must say it's a lot of work but so far I "LOVE" the program. I have never study so much in my life and still I cannot finish every reading assignments. I'm just taking "one day at a time" and do the best that I can.

Yes, my friend was in the 15 month program. She begged and pleaded with the two professors who gave her a C+ but they refuse to change her grade. From what she told me anything below a B- is considered failing. I'm glad your experience is going great!!!

Hi guys,

Does anyone know the requirements for the accelerated program, in terms of pre-req GPA, and overall GPA. And also, can apply for the program while Im still working on the prereqs?

Thanks, Alex

hi there

i am in my last semester of this program. if i remember correctly, the gpa requirement is pretty low - a 2.8 or something like that. most people i know in the program have pretty high gpa's for the pre reqs but i dont think there is any specific written requirement about it - just the general 2.8 and above. once you are in the program you have to maintain a b and above throughout, otherwise you get kicked off the accelerated course. you don't need to take the GRE to apply which is good as some schools like Pace make you do this. If the pre reqs are the same as when i started then they are microbiology, anatomy 1 and 2, statistics, developmental psych and nutrition - just make sure you ask them if they accept the credits from the particular college where you take them as i remember some people had problems with this. when i applied i still had 4 pre reqs to take and i squeezed them into the summer before i started nyu so yes, you should definitely go ahead and apply. good luck and i hope this helps a little.

Hey you all!!! As everyone graduated yet? I'm just curious to know if you all are done and are RN's now?!?

hi.. i just recently graduated from NYU's 4 yr traditional program.. and just to make a few comments:

- the ages of the accelerated and 2nd degree students range from 22 to 45, at least in my classes

- traditional students from high school, transfer students, 2nd degree students, and 15 month accelerated students are all mixed in together wen it comes to classes, but everyone ends up on a different "track," depending on whether you pass or fail a class, skip a semester, etc. the 15 month-ers speed right along and quickly surpass the other students

- clinical placement at NYU is great compared to other schools, at least when I compare it to my friends schools. NYU downtown (tisch), mt sinai, mamonaides in bklyn, montefiore, lij north shore manhasset, ny presbyterian cornell, community based health clinics, these are all the places i've had clinical. and there are a lot more placements all over nyc

- yea the scrubs are purple.. :lol2:

i hope everyone is having a good first semester! i kno the 15 month track is intense, but the instructors are great and so are the students. when i graduated, i had never felt so proud of myself and was so glad that i went to NYU.. good luck!

I think NYU is an awesome school! I just graduated in the summer and i just took my NCLEX (i find out tomorrow if i passed)--fingures crossed...All and all i think NYU prepares you as best they can, the teachers are great! They will go to any length to help you out as long as you put the time in. Always come to class, ask questions when you are uncertain and BE ON TIME FOR Clinicails!!!!!

In clinicals try and learn as much as you can coz it will help you when taking the NCLEX later on when you graduate!

About the teachers they are tough and they teach you what you need to know.

I would say Dr. Jackson is the hardest teacher i had there, but shes really makes you think critically........I loved her classes......

I'll never forget Dr. Fu (fundamentals teacher--NS1). She is a good teacher (her english is a little hard to understand), but she makes you know the important stuff. I would say it's very very important to do well in that class coz that's your ground level of knowledge.

Whoever goes to nyu will probably have a pretty good experience....I look back with some nice memories and a lot of student loans. It's very expensive!!!!!!!!!
