Hello Bubbles I am still a nursing student so I can't really give you info on hospitals but I read your bit about how you like the greenery and still the hustle and bustle of a place and so wanted to recommend Park Slope in Brooklyn. I come from the UK originally (i've only been in the US 4 years) and lived in London while I did my first degree in American Studies :wink2: and Park Slope reminds me of Stoke Newington or Islington a little bit. Its only 10 or so minutes into Manhattan from here and they have two really nice hospitals - New York Methodist (http://www.nym.org) and Long Island College Hospital in the vicinity. The rents are highish but if you search you can get a good deal... there are nice pubs, bars and restaurants and a giant park nearby... anyhoo, I hope you find something you like... lemme know if you want any more info :) Cheers!

Hi all! Does anyone know of hospitals that offer 8hr shifts in either Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island or Queens instead of the 12 hour ones? I think I would prefer the 5 day week and so am trying to gather this info. Thanks in advance :)

Hello, I am graduating in a few months and am very interested in working at NYM. Is it very difficult to get a job there - did you call or write to them when you applied? I read your bit about the orientation which sounds like a good length. Is it a friendly atmosphere there? Would you mind if I asked what the salary is like there for a new grad? Pay is a big thing for me as I have huge debts to pay back Thanks a lot!!!

hi there i am in my last semester of this program. if i remember correctly, the gpa requirement is pretty low - a 2.8 or something like that. most people i know in the program have pretty high gpa's for the pre reqs but i dont think there is any specific written requirement about it - just the general 2.8 and above. once you are in the program you have to maintain a b and above throughout, otherwise you get kicked off the accelerated course. you don't need to take the GRE to apply which is good as some schools like Pace make you do this. If the pre reqs are the same as when i started then they are microbiology, anatomy 1 and 2, statistics, developmental psych and nutrition - just make sure you ask them if they accept the credits from the particular college where you take them as i remember some people had problems with this. when i applied i still had 4 pre reqs to take and i squeezed them into the summer before i started nyu so yes, you should definitely go ahead and apply. good luck and i hope this helps a little.

Thanks a lot! I just checked on their website and everything sounds good but they don't really get into specifics about what kind of orientation program they offer or what a competitive salary is. Do you work at one of their hospitals and if so, do you know who I would contact about this kind of stuff or maybe you know a little about these issues? thank you both so much for the advice this is going to sound really stupid but what is an RNA? i think you are right that you see a LOT of things in the emergency room and it is an incredible way to learn. i think though, that my clinical skills arn't so great right now and i feel that maybe it would be better just to take 6mos - 1 year to get them right in a slightly slower paced environment i am also hoping that when i go into the ER eventually i can find one with a really good and intense orientation program - does anyone know ER's in NYC with a good orientation program reputation?

thanks for writing me back with good advice. i agree with you - i think that everyone is different and has to think about what they can handle or what kind of environment they want to be in. i am pretty much decided that i will do a years worth of medical-surgical nursing before specializing any where. because i took an accelerated nursing degree i don't feel i have had enough exposure of clinical skills and worry that i won't be able to grasp half the stuff in a hectic ER. thanks again! :wink2:
