hey everyone! i graduated from glendale community college. i'm so glad that i went through nursing school and i love my new career! it's awesome.
What you don't know about the GCC weekend program going in is that in Block 2 (and possibly the other blocks) is you have to go to the hospital on Thursday afternoon/night to pick your patient and do your care plan. I'm luckier than most, I only work til 1300 on Thursdays....Its a time crunch for sure, I made sure my daughter is entertained on Thurs nite.
You're not dense at all, there seems to be a lack of communication from the school about the specifics of the class schedule. I'm sure that times of day could change, but all the classes for the weekend block are on friday and saturday. You'll probably have to go to the hospital where your clinicals are on Thursday night to pick your patient during 2nd block like we do. I don't know how your class will be, but ours wraps up by 10:30 on Saturdays, so its kinda handy that way. A lot of my classmates take a 1/2 day off work on Thursdays to accomodate the time needed to do a care plan. I recommend it if you can.
yay! i was just placed in the weekend program through the helping hands for single moms special application process. i'm so excited to start! i live in tempe so it will be quite a drive, but it's worth it to be taken off of the wait list (i've only been on since february).
for you other weekender's, will you also be working or do you have to take out private loans? i've been looking into private loans and have been trying to decide the best lender lender to apply through.
can't wait to meet you all!
i also got accepted to the gcc nursing program through the helping hands scholarship! congrats to us lol! i only waited a short while too (4 months). are you taking the traditional program? i am pretty nervous to start in january being that i was the absolute dead last person to be accepted for the spring 2009 block 1 lol i just found out seriously 4 days ago! and nowww i have less than 2 weeks to turn in all of my stuff from the packet they mailed to everyone. needless to say, i'm stressed, but very greatful of course. it's such short notice that i'm just feeling really underprepared for this big change in my life you know - especially with how demanding the program is supposed to be.
as far as the loan, i would definitely go with the need based loans that you are offered through the government, if you did not qualify for financial aid, as my 1st option. if you still didn't qualify for the need based loans, my 2nd option would be thru a dredit union, since they tend to have better rates than a bank (try mountain america or desert schools. i have used both for an auto loan and they're great). most all school loans that i have looked into have the same basic components - fast money in amounts of 5,000 on up to 50,000, that doesn't have to be paid off until 6 months after graduation. so the most important thing is the apr after that 6 month period, unless you can pay it back before they begin hitting you with interest, i would look for an apr no more than 8% the lower the better of course.
I am also starting at GCC in the spring! Traditional as well. LOL I am the dead last person to be placed for this semester - I just found our literally 4 days ago, and school starts in a month!! I was placed through the helping hands scholarship special placement and it's a long story, but what's important is I'm in! I have a 2 year old so i'm really nervous that I won't have the enough time for family and school. I don't want to spread myself too thing in either area. What are your thoughts about school in january??
Congratulations on starting this spring. I had my appointment monday to turn all my health documentation in. I was nervous just doing that, thinking "what if I screwed this up? They'll think I am a moron." Ha Ha everything was fine of course. I can't believe orientation is almost here. Is anyone taking the extra classes? GCCnrsngSTDT I just wanted to say Hi looks like we will be in the program together.

Ok some additional info for any looking. The school registered me, the NUR104 class is a semester long, one hour on fridays after class. It is suppose to focus in on what to study from what was just taught. The schedule looks like this so far: Friday 7am to 11am lab, 11 to 12 break, noon to 3:30pm lecture, 3:35 to 4:45 NUR104 study class. Saturday 7am to 12:30 lab (this is thru february then it looks like saturday change because of clinicals) it will be friday the same and then saturday 6:30 to 1:45 off site at hospital. The tuition is $938 (thats for the math class and study class) there is also a $100 class fee (included in $938), so with books and tution its $1556. Then you need to budget in uniform, stethoscope, watch, school supplies. Hope this info helps anyone that was dying for details as I was!
