Specializes in Hoping to be a peds nurse..

hi everyone!

i'm a nursing student in an adn program in mo. i posted this question in the general nursing area because i was hoping i could answers get from more seasoned nurses.

i just went on an interview at a state mental hospital for a nurse's aide position and i was offered a job but i wasn't able to accept because i would have had to take 5 days off from school for training. the person that i interviewed with however was very impressed with my skills and qualifications and said she love to have me as an rn upon graduation. (may)

may is kind of a long ways off. how do i keep in contact with her, stay fresh in her mind, and let her know that i'm still interested in the position (without bugging her) until may?

There is no other way to train? like a couple weekends, or your days off. That is how I got and kept a job before graduating...by working at that hospital. Good luck, with the job market the way it is, you got to try to hold onto it.

no, no other way. a mandatory 5 concurrent days, daytime training at the hospital. it was also very close to my graduation date so i might as well have waited anyway! i was a little upset but i was definitely was not expecting to be offered an rn position either.

May is only 5 months away. I'd email her a couple times through the semester. Do a post-interview message right now, then around Spring Break send an update that you're doing well in your classes and will be in touch in May after graduating.

if i was you i wouldn't worry about staying entouch with her right now. call her in april when you know your really close to graduation & if she's serious about hiring you it will all work out! good luck! i'm a 4th semester rn student looking forward to graduation & employment!!

i would give her a call each month, once a month until graduation. let her know that you are still interested in the position as an rn. if you're up to it, update her on your progress through school. after graduation, update her on your ati and nclex progress. if she is seriously interested in you, you won't be "annoying" her. in fact, she might appreciate that you are seriously interested in working at that institution.

waiting and putting it off until april may not be enough. she may forget about you. with jobs so scarce these days are you willing to take that chance? new grad positions are competitive these days. you have a network connection to a future job, take advantage of that.

good luck in school and happy to hear you graduate soon. :)

I think that is a fantastic idea!! This will keep you fresh in her mind and show interest without being as pushy as making phone calls or in person visits.

Why not ask her what you really want to know? "I am very interested in working here as an RN. Would I be bothering you if I stayed in touch for the next ....... weeks? Would it be convenient if I gave you a call, emailed, or stopped by in person?" Take the direct route, in MHO.
