Georgetown U. Accelerated BSN - Spring 2010

Published

Hi Everyone,

I just submitted my application for Georgetown's Accelerated BSN starting Spring 2010 and I just wanted to open a post for anyone else that has applied as well.

JustJane -

I totally understand... 70k is a lot of money and cost of living is high! Let me know what you decide though! I am from Sacramento - not to far from you. Do you think you will bring a car? Im leaving mine behind. If you drive and want company, let me know...! Thats a long drive. Otherwise i was planning on buying a one-way ticket. :)

Have you applied to Duke? I though their next application date was next July.. a long way to wait.

I did get accepted into Marymount in Arlington, which was my backup. SImilar program length, and cost is 44k as opposed to 70k.......

I am crossing my fingers for the scholarship as well!! ahhhh so much waiting!!

lizzylou- thanks! congrats to you too! I remember speaking to you and justjane. It looks like we have at 3 or people from our interview on here! Anyone else from Oct 3? And you are way better than me on the essay. I am STRUGGLING through it. Its been a crazy week and I just got back from a 24hour trip to FL for a funeral. Came home to an A&P II exam and work so I am really going to have to pull it together!! Any idea what time we have to submit it? By end of business day or just the end of the day. crossing my fingers for 11:59 pm. and I got the same impression as you, that the WHC people would be pouring over them all weekend and should have a decision by Monday/early next week. I believe one of them was going on vaca. so thats good because I cant start celebrating yet. 70k....just not sure if I can justify that.Plus I have to be able to get every single penny loaned to me. PLus some to live off of. Thats almost 6 figures! Anybody NOT interested in the scholarship?

Ok, so I did NOT get in to Georgetown and I am not shocked, but a bit confused (and depressed). I was granted an interview which I thought went very well. Would anyone mind sharing what their undergrad GPA is and grades they received on their pre-requisites? My undergrad GPA is a 3.49 from PSU and I have all A's on my pre-reqs except for one B+ in A&P 1. I am asking because I am considering applying again, but do not want to waste my time if I am out of my league here.

Any other insights aside from the "we received a record number of applications" explanation that Georgetown let me down with would help too.

On another note congrats to everyone who got in!

This is my first time using this forum...I got accepted to the program at Georgetown for spring 2010- I had one question: after submitting the scholarship essay did you get an email saying they received it? Did any of you have your interview on the 22nd?? Congrats and good luck everyone...looking forward to seeing you all...YAY!!!

Beach it,

Did you have any other type of experience either volunteering or working as a CNA or EMT? I have been CNA certified for the past 2 years, and they really seemed to like that. When I walked into my interview, they told me that I had a tremendous amount of experience so I think that experience is a key aspect.

Naz0818- I did not get an email after I submitted my essay. Did you?

Naz0808-

I was there on the 22nd!! :) Congrats...! I did not get an email saying they received it.... but if you go back to the email with the link to the application, you will see your essay posted in the boxes.. I have checked the app like 3 times, and my essay is in the boxes everytime i access the application again.

Beach It - I agree with Allimar... experience is huge... when did you graduate PSU? How much real world experience do you have since u graduated? I dont have health care experience, but i have great post-grad experience that I think made the biggest difference in me getting in. In fact, I think it was key. I had a strong admissions essay and a strong resume. If you got an interview, I think it clearly means you are qualified!! If you could do some really awesome volunteer work between now and the next application round, I would (depending on how much you want to get in).. You have the grades for it.. thats clearly not the issue. It might just be a an issue of getting more experience.. the kind of experinence that will set you apart in a crowd of people....

Ok I will check the link.....and verify that my essay is there!!! I really hope to get the scholarship because it's a lot of money!! I have no idea about where to live..any ideas??

WLJ2009, I remember you from the interview...you asked me about Detroit Mercy right? Congrats!

Beach It- for the last 1 1/2 years I have been working for 2 physicians at their private practice, my overall GPA I believe was a 3.7? I have a BS in Biology and an MBA as well- before going back to school I worked as a District Manager for 7-Eleven....hope that helps. I totally agree with Allimar, get more experience and try again. you will get in! Good luck!

Naz0818 -

Yes, I definetly remember you!! You are the one from michigan... CONGRATS! It will be nice to see a (semi) familiar face in january.. :) I did ask you about UDM.. that was the first school i heard back from - GU is my top choice, so even if I do not get the scholarship, i will most likely still attend. I have spoken with ALumni who say its worth it (even with the high tuition). Maybe we should start a facebook group for our class. Anyone interested?

Thanks everyone for responding:)

No, I did not have experience as an EMT or CNA. My major was Education and I am a full-time classroom teacher and a sports coach (Not medical experience). I understand that they like that you have medical experience, but I can't help what my profession is. I am frustrated because this is a second degree accelerated program for students with a bachelors in something other than nursing.

So.... I guess you are all right I need to volunteer in my spare time if I can find any:/ And maybe I need a higher GPA too... Man.

For all those who submitted the essay already: When you go back and check it, are your apostrophes

upside down question marks??

They definitely didn't look that way when I posted and submitted the essay!

Anyone else?

Lizzylou!

Yes! That happened to me.. i had a minor freak out.. but it has to be something on their end,. not ours :)

Don't worry... I am sure will be completely fine!

Beach it - I don't think your GPA is the issue at all.... If you were invited, it means you have everything you need. Maybe you just need a little something extra that will show them your passion and desire for nursing.

Hi Everyone-Thought I would weigh in on the acceptance debate as I am beginning to feel a bit lucky to have gotten in. Beach It my GPA is comparable to yours. I have A's in all the prerequisites I have taken since deciding to go back to school and most from my undergraduate degree. (I think I had a B in English and maybe chem.) I personally dont have any formal experience (aside from an internship in the NICU in HS) I did start volunteering at Johns Hopkins Bayview but not before I applied. I did mention that at my interview though. My experience is mostly in the service industry which they seemed more impressed with than anything as I was pretty involved in training and development but I also I think because I talk a good talk about service in Nursing (which isnt actually "talk" I just mean I was pretty confident about that part of my interview) Other than that they referenced my personal statement alot. So I assuming that has something to do with it. And there are also recommendations. We are never going to know how they judge what our recommendations say or our personal statements for that matter. Those are the subjective factors that we just don't know how they are weighted. Someone earlier in this post suggested reaching out to state your interest in being an alternate. I don't know if they have a traditional waitlist but I am sure not everyone accepted will attend. Out of the 50 or people accepted we're only representative of about 6 or 7.

On another note, has anyone received any additional info yet? I know i asked this question early but I have this fear that they are going to come back to me and they oops we sent you the wrong email...sorry, you didn' make the cut.

Also, I submitted my Scholars essay tonight. A bit late in the day but I had to work pretty late. I hope I was able to pull off something inspiring enough to take a chance on me! I'm sure we'll all be crossing our fingers. Then maybe I can breathe a little. It's been a long two weeks!
