Why didn't the doctor treat EVERYONE for this???

My oldest daughter who is 7 was treated for scabies. No "special light" was used to look for mites, no scrapings, no ink test..nothing. OK maybe the doctor knew immediately what it was. Gave her medication Elimite to treat it..OK..I have a 4 year old and a 16 month old..all my girls play together with toys, blankets, get in each others bed, hug/love on one another. I asked the doctor if they were going to treat ALL of us..they said NO..basically schedule another appointment if we show signs. OK from nursing school and all that I read about treatment it HIGHLY recommends that the entire family be treated at the same time. She could get them again!!

I feel that I am washing bedding, vacuuming in vain because I may have them and don't know it yet..same for the rest of us. She was treated Monday. I have not been treated so I guess I continue to work, my hubby too, and my other kids continue to let them go to daycare/preschool? I just feel that we could be passing them around and I could be cleaning my house "to death" for months to come..instead of just treating all of us and doing a major cleaning now.

Not looking for advice here...just wondering what ya'll think??!!!! Besides vacuuming the floor is there stuff to wipe on bedposts, floors, sinks, etc that is effective in treating this additionally??

I have never known a physician to treat only one family member for scabies. If one is treated, enough med is prescribed for the entire family.

We had a pre-op patient once who came in with scabies. All the staff got treated. She got treated and rescheduled for a later date.

Find a new doc; yours is an idiot.

Yep, find another doc. Is he/she just wanting more money, hence having to schedule another apointment? I had scabies once :o My husband caught it from me. Yeah, your whole family should be treated. I mean, why not, just to be on the safe side.

perhaps the age of the youngest is a problem?...though,i too, have never seen only the obvious person rx'd. always those who mght be in close contact as well...

Specializes in neuro, ICU/CCU, tropical medicine.

Just to play the devil's advocate, Elimite is permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid. There has been some concern over potential neurotoxicity to young children who might absorb it through the skin, but I think that's been disproven.

When I was 16 or 17 I had scabies, and no one in my house got it from me, but my mom almost made me sleep in the garage.

What was the real reason you were in the garage till you left home...

If I were you I would get a new Dr.

When my son was in preschool we got a letter home sayinng that one of the students had scabies. Granted this student was in the classroom on different days than my son was - but, they used the same dressup clothes and such. I had my son in the Dr's office the same day and we were given a prescription to use. (a cream - don't remember name of it!) No questions asked, no tests done. Dr actually was glad to give us the perscription. I feel itchy just thinking about it!

I think you would know if you had scabies.

You would ITCH!

And yes, the rest of your family should be treated, at least once.

Scabies is horrible! I am intimately acquainted, if you know what I mean!

Father in law was in the hospital last year, went to rehab then came home. He was taking new medications and is very old, so occasional itching was nothing new. A month later, he had a UTI and got Levaquin-itching alot! What would you assume-reaction right?

Anyway that was the beginning of August-lots of visits to the PMD and dermatologist ensued. Sometime in September, husband, sister-in-law, home companion, cat, and myself were all experiencing some form of itching-ankles, elbows, knees...other places-but no one was sharing.

Then, one day sis in law mention itchy ankle, elbow and other place--so does husband, I add my:twocents:-use the good old internet and guess what? Scabies! I surmise.

Call dermatologist, who was just about to call me-skin plug she had taken from father in law "infested" YUCK! Pretty much her response.

Whole family, caregiver, cat treated. Two times!!!!

Worst experience ever!

So the moral of this tale....treat everyone, hot water washes to bedding, put blankets, and other non washables in a bag and leave for a week, see your vet(adults can live, but not breed on pets), I steam machined mattresses, furniture and carpeting around bed.

Now when a nursing home or rehab patient comes in to the ER. I always gown-I refuse to get them again!

Many years ago, I went with my parents to visit one of my grandmothers in the nursing home. They sat on her bed and touched her; I did not. They got scabies; I did not. They were treated; I was not.
