As many of you are aware we "allnurses' staff went to Washington DC and had a booth in the exibitors floor.

During our time at the booth in DC we had many people who said they surfed allnurses.com site but didnt join and become members even though it is free to join.

So my question is what made you take the plunge and become a member?

And for those surfing the web site right now, why dont you join and tell us why you never joined before?

I am just interested really why?

I've been on allnurses for around 2 1/2 yrs, give or take. I was about to start LPN school and being anal about being prepared, I scourred the internet looking for good sites for info. Allnurses was the first site that popped up on my search. And I recalled quite a few years before I had found this site and loved it.

I honestly don't think I had any intention of "joining' even though it was free but I came upon a post that I wanted to reply to and without joining, I couldn't. So i took the plunge and joined..didn't hurt at all :)

On the premise that discussion promotes thought and leads to further critical thinking I thought this site was perfect for me to both ask questions and learn from the current mindset of practicing nurses. You can be kept up to date on current topics and also vent when you need to. My wife makes the effort to understand where I am trying to go with this pursuit of education but it is also equally nice to speak with others that are currently going through the same process and/or have been there and done that :)

I joined a couple of years ago, when I was doing pre-requisites for my RN program. I wasn't sure which school to apply to, and a google search led me here. I became a member, because I had a bunch of questions. The Florida forum had a wealth of information, and the members were very honest about the pros and cons of each school.

In the end, it was what I read on here, that made me choose the path I did. And I don't regret a thing! Initially I only posted on the Florida forum, about school-related topics. But when things got settled, I ventured out to the other boards. :D

Well, I joined because when I was a student I often found Allnurses links while searching for information. On occasion Allnurses would give me insight into something that just had a generic explanation in my nursing text. A good example would be "NG tubes, unplugging".

I also feel that the good and the bad aspects of nursing, although they can be depressing to read, are often right on the mark. I read it all. We all should. I think all of this can only give insight should you find yourself in a similar situation some day.

Working in an ICU... death, dying.. death.. being up on the latest technology.... well yeah! NO ONE understands our stressers, how much we give of ourselves, how exhausted and thankless we are, verbally abused by patients, families, peers and management.... and we are crazy enough to clock in the next day.

"talking" and bonding with people that understand what I face... how sometimes I have nothing left for family and friends because I've already given everything and more my last 12 hours.... others knowing that a simple judgement call can be life and death...

Knowing that at work I have to present a strong and experienced presence and try to keep it together and teach and at home I have to flip some random switch and suddenly be OK for those I love. Just being here with others, unknown and I can really be me and share my fears, my exhaustion as well as ask for advice and opinions from my peers world wide is incredible.

Plus here I can stay up with the "beat' of nurses everywhere and see that I'm not alone in my issues... joint commission ticks everyone off... press gainey needs a snyper for hire... "customer satisfaction" is rampant... open ICU visitation is the new wave of the future... I just gain knowledge when I'm here.

My facility is not the only one going off the chain and I'm not alone.

I simply don't feel alone when I am here.

Unsure what lead me here except maybe I saw a link to it; been a member 5-6 years I think now and not only have I laughed and cried in relating to various posts but have also learned so VERY MUCH on this website.

I've been a member for about 3 years. I'm not real sure why I joined, I'm thinking maybe because I wanted to reply to a post. I like the fact that most of the people are honest and open with their questions and answers. I have gained lots of useful info from many of my "friends". I've recommended this site to several of my coworkers.

Well I joined cuz...

WHY NOT! :D

I love being a "know it all nurse." I think I am so brilliant and have so much to offer, ha ha. I love to have people ask questions that I might know something about, put in my two cents. I love a site where I can annonymously ask the "stupid" questions I have. I think I am a frustrated author, I love to re-read my (brilliant, ha ha) posts over and over, (I feel like a crazy egomaniac when I do this!)

I am a new nurse and new to this site. During school I came across this site on many occasions and it was extremely helpful during my education. From what I have learned in my years of experience as a CNA, a nursing student and a new LPN, there is no such thing as a perfect nurse. You will make mistakes and when you do, you feel like the worst person in the world. People here will teach you, applaud you, tell you that you are right or wrong. This site helps other nurses grow to be the best nurse that you can be. So for that, I am proud to be a member!!:)
