Is it true or false that there is an age maximum to become a nurse? If so, what is it?

Sorry if my question is very trivial, but thank you for your responses in advance!

I don't think it would be legal. My guess is that as long as you can do the job, what does it matter how old you are?

I am starting out at 38. The class ahead of mine had a student starting out at 59...and she wasn't the oldest student they have had!

I have never heard of an age restriction. In my nursing school there is someone who is 58. This is a second career for her. I don't think age matters but performance does.

Theoretically, you cannot refuse to hire based on age, but good luck proving you are being discriminated against for that reason. Come to an interview an look and act professional, and age should be the last thing on their mind....but who knows. As long as you can physically perform the job duties like lifting and moving patients in bed, I think you're ok.

In my summer externship last year, there was a nursing student in the program who was 75 years old, I kid you not. I feel that that was a bit ridiculous, given that after he finished school, he'd be 77 or 78, and then how long would he work before retiring? 2 years, tops? But to answer your question, that proves there is definitely not an age limit!

no not that i have heard... we have a RN on my med/surg unit that is 75 now and she has been a RN for 4 years . i love her , she is a very good nurse. she told me she to nursing school because she wanted to try somehting new , she was a checker at walmart and was sick of it. she told me she woke up one day and decided to go to RN school and accomplished it .... she handles her 6 patients and does a great job.... she told me she will work unitl she dies or needs a walker...

so never give up

I'm going to have to go with FALSE on this one.

I've heard many stories where people in their 50s+ become doctors, so I don't see how a nurse, who's a step down so to speak, would be any different.

And when I say step down, I don't mean to insult anyone. A lot of people on here (for some odd reason) think that nurses are people who couldn't make it as a doctor, which is also false.

I think in the UK there is a cut off point of 55 for nurse training but that could have changed over the years.
