Too ugly to be a nurse..?!?

Nurses General Nursing

Before I begin... I want to say,

HELLO EVERYONE! I'm new to this site. I recently signed up after researching information on nursing and found this forum.

I'm in college studying health care sciences I'm trying to get into the LPN program. I know have the brains and I will make the grades but, I'm a little insecure about the way I look. I don't think I look like the average nurse you'll see in medical offices or hospitals.

1) I'm very short (5'0ft)

2) I weight 135 but I have tiny measurements & limbs. I'm like the size of an 12 year old.

3) My face.. isn't that hot either . I have a big nose, ance scarring and chin dimple. I hate!!!!

4) I could wear foundation to cover up the ance scarring but, I have super oily skin so, after hours of wearing it. My face is so greasy & shiny.

I know it sounds like I'm beating up myself, but, I'm not. I'm constantly overhearding people calling me, "ugly" or I look like a man. Idk... If I should apply for the program because of it.

I don't want anyone to not want me to touch them because of my physical appearance.

Walk into the place (the hospital, the classroom, nurses station...wherever!) like you own the place.

I bet you're beautiful and need to hear it. We are telling you...your brains AND everything that goes along with your amazing brains is beautiful!

It sounds to me like you belong in nursing. I would caution you about one thing, however, and that is using the term Nurse in your user name when you're not one yet. Technically it is against the law to represent oneself as a nurse when one has not taken the NCLEX and met the requirements for licensure. You can ask the moderators for suggestions on changing your onscreen identity. Wishing you the very best...we need you!

Mate, it doesn't matter if you're a munter or a beauty go for it if you have a desire to.

You know how many men have seen me, a male nurse, walk over and said "na I want a hot female"? Zero.

I don't want to be flippant about your concerns, because clearly the trouble you, but I just don't think they're an issue in this profession.

At least if you need to catheterise a chap you won't have the problem my friend had when the male patient got a little overexcited...

I think it's human nature to size up people in those first few brief seconds of meeting them; it's inbuilt, and we can't help but notice if someone is attractive or not, as the case may or may not be. Plus it's very subjective anyway. However, beyond the initial and instinctual first impression ("oh that person's cute"), I absolutely couldn't care less what you look like. Far...FAR.... more important to me is your demeanor, tone, kindness, compassion, genuine concern, and of course your intelligence and understanding of your job.

I've been a patient a few times, and the nurses that cared for me, some were pretty, some not so much, but it mattered not one jot.

I would object to someone caring for me who was rude, abrasive, hostile, didn't seem to know what they were doing, and had little kindness or compassion; they could be the most beautiful person I had laid eyes on but that would be utterly irrelevant compared to the latter. Furthermore, their physical beauty would rapidly diminish in my eyes based on their unkind and uncaring behavior.

My heart hurts for you that you have had to hear such hurtful things said about you.

Don't listen to those jerks!!! I'm sure you're NOT ugly. People who call other people ugly are the ugly ones! People come in all different shapes and sizes, but beauty really does come from within. Don't let anything stop you from pursuing your goals. Don't hate how you look, try to love yourself for your own unique beauty that you have that your parents gave you. Having a healthy body, mind and spirit is more important than some arbitrary beauty standard. Take care of yourself. Sending you a big hug.

You know beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. For a long time I would not wear sandals because I was tormented by a very dysfunctional family who told me I had the ugliest feet there ever was...Fred Flintstone had better feet than me. This was just one of the many verbal abuses I held internally. It was not until I was married and my husband told me he loved my feet, and even then it was another 5 years before I would try sandals. I have been wearing sandals for over 20 years now and no one has ever said to me I have ugly feet with exception of two women who were on the beach near me. My friend just replied to them well you know considering all the fighting in the world I guess we should all be lucky we have feet (this was when Princess Di was going to the landmine areas). Everyone just laughed at those women and they did not come back.

Please do not be so hard on your self you sound like you are a beautiful soul and it clearly shines from the inside out. DO NOT LET ANYONE STOP YOU FROM GOING AFTER YOUR DREAMS. If you want to be a nurse then be a nurse.

I think you need to get to a point in your life where it does not matter what others say, it does hurt when words cut but you have to learn how to deal with those words in a manner that will not affect your life in a negative way.

NEVER ALLOW ANOTHER PERSON TO HAVE ENOUGH INFLUENCE OVER YOU SO YOU CHOOSE TO NOT LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE. ONLY YOU SHOULD HAVE THAT POWER TO LEAD YOUR LIFE THE WAY YOU WANT.

My wish for you is that one day you will be on this thread and the initials after your name will be LPN or RN.

Facilities don't hire people for their looks. They want warm bodies who know their stuff, show up on time and when scheduled, who do their work.

Or, like at Wrongway Regional Medical Center, as long as a body is still warm and has credentials at the end of their name!

Like the concept of being so bad, it's good.

Healthcare, at least where I live and work, is the most diverse work environment imaginable. Our crash carts include folding stools so smaller-statured providers can give effective compressions. My favorite surgeon is the smallest person I have ever met. I think of her hands as precision tools able to do the more delicate work with more finesse than bigger MDs.

This is really sad that you are feeling like this or I hope just an honest appraisal of yourlooks.I once worked at a place where I had sneaking suspicion that a certain department was hiring only pretty model types, lol. Not apimple among them.

Look keep a good skin care regimen, see your dermatologist. As long as you are neat , clean, your hair well kept, wear clean smelling uniforms, throw out old used lanyards, who cares what the rest think,be the best you can be.You will be fine.
