Before I begin... I want to say,

HELLO EVERYONE! I'm new to this site. I recently signed up after researching information on nursing and found this forum.

I'm in college studying health care sciences I'm trying to get into the LPN program. I know have the brains and I will make the grades but, I'm a little insecure about the way I look. I don't think I look like the average nurse you'll see in medical offices or hospitals.

1) I'm very short (5'0ft)

2) I weight 135 but I have tiny measurements & limbs. I'm like the size of an 12 year old.

3) My face.. isn't that hot either . I have a big nose, ance scarring and chin dimple. I hate!!!!

4) I could wear foundation to cover up the ance scarring but, I have super oily skin so, after hours of wearing it. My face is so greasy & shiny.

I know it sounds like I'm beating up myself, but, I'm not. I'm constantly overhearding people calling me, "ugly" or I look like a man. Idk... If I should apply for the program because of it.

I don't want anyone to not want me to touch them because of my physical appearance.

Many people would rather a caring nurse than a pretty nurse. (I definitely would!!!) If you're devoted & capable, you can be an excellent nurse, whether you think you're ugly or not.

But honestly, I think dedication & competency are really the keys to being a nurse people appreciate.

Why is everyone saying looks don't matter in order to be a nurse? Aren't we supposed to have flowing and "well oiled" hair, form fitting uniforms, and perfectly done make up if we want to have pride in our profession and to have the respect of the public and our coworkers?

Well, that's what I read once. ;)

I am so sorry that you've had people tell you that you're ugly or that you look like a man. I can see why that would be discouraging. But I want to encourage you by telling you that the value of a nurse has absolutely NOTHING to do with her/his attractiveness. Nothing.

If you desire to care for others as a nurse, I say go for it! Your physical appearance doesn't impact the care inside your heart, the knowledge inside your brain, or the practice inside your hands.

OP: Your self-hatred and self-deprecation is distressing. However, your negative views on your looks have absolutely zero to do with actually being a nurse- or any other career you want to pursue, if we're being honest. If you want to be a nurse, then go for it. Stop the self hatred please.

Your beautiful

Bunch of comments I dont have time to go thru. But I would seriously suggest you get some kind of therapy for your low self esteem. It doesn't matter where you work, people will see you and it sounds like you need some way to deal with how badly you feel about yourself.

I'll be honest, I haven't read the pages of posts, so I'm sorry if this has been said, but I doubt 99.9% of your patients would care what you look like, just that you do a good job. In the chance that it's you, yourself who can't get over your looks, then go into the NICU or newborn nursery, I assure you, the little babies don't care one lick what you look like. Also, I'm not sure what you consider an average hospital or clinic, but every hospital I've worked in has a huge range of people working there, from drop dead gorgeous to... shall we say not traditionally attractive, and everything in between. But that has never been a focal point of patient or coworkers (unless someone is looking to hook up, but... ew).
