I quit one job, turned down another job, went through drug testing, physical agility testing, and everything but orientation and they rescinded the offer. I don't know what I am going to do now...

Call that reference place and ask are you eligible for rehire. You might find the info was passed under the table and not through official channels. Refs are predominantly yes will rehire, no would not rehire. Anything else could be taken as libel.

They just said it was based on reference checks. We discussed that in the interview and I told them that one might be unfavorable. I think I am going to throw up.

Tomorrow, I will start looking again. I am just devastated right now.

I suggest that you research your state laws on that issue. Here in cali if you find out that a reference is on the scuttle for you...you can take legal action against them, my wife is in management and she always says that its not worth a law suit just to reference someone so they don't say anything. Most employers here will only verify that you worked for them and that is it, they won't even say whether your eligilble for rehire or if you quit without notice. Makes it tough, because you have to find personal ref from you last places of employment but the good is that of course you choose who that is.

Good luck...its a short sighted employer that after being told that a reference is bad will give that much credit to it. In my book the honesty is worth more.

Unfortunately, while you mostly always hear that places are only allowed to give dates of employment and eligibility for re-hire, many employers now have ways around that to get the "real scoop". This is done by having you, the applicant, sign a waiver on the application for employment that says you agree not to hold the reference liable for any damages to you (i.e. giving you a poor reference). Totally sucks that they can just have free reign like that because there are always 2 sides to the story.

Cotjockey....I am so sorry you are going through this. Like another poster said, it is totally unprofessional of them to impulsively offer you the job before checking out everything on their end first.

Can you get your former job back, if not FT then maybe PRN for now? Or maybe try calling the job you turned down and tell them you reconsidered. I really hope everything works out for you - and soon!! Just don't forget who you are and what you are...You are a nurse - one of the most trusted professionals on the earth. And WE are in demand. So don't forget that!

that sucks, doesn't it

That sucks... they should at least tell you what the problem is since they already offered you a job!

This is what I would do....make up the name of a home healthcare agency and start calling and check your OWN references and find out who the culpret is...and make sure you record the call.

If they are badmouthing you, and don't have legal grounds to do that, you can sue them for slander.

The employers that I worked for the only way references were given were by subpoena or if it was a law enforcement background and then they required the release to be specific to them. Even with the release a law suit can occurr which makes the employer have to prove the reasons for the poor reference. With legal fees as high as they are...it is often felt not worth it to protect a company that is probably competition from a bad employee.

I do support you--- do not give up istill belive you could try applying , possibly to other hospitals unill you succeed thi is most unfortunate usually when door closes a window opens; and another thing sometimes things happens for the better.

Hey Cotjock,

You are TOO GOOD FOR THEM!

There's a reason why this isn't your place....

Your place will come....don't despair....

Just when you think things are just the worst they can be, the RIGHT job will come along, and it will be the right fit for you....

Don't give up...

I once had to call the HR dept. of a hosp. over ten times....I think I called twice a week just to get an interview.....and once I did, I was hired that day.....

Persistence, perserverance, courage....and just being plain fiesty....

You can do this....I know you can....and I know you will succeed...

now....pick yourself up....get back out there....and go find your bliss...

I will keep praying the perfect fit comes your way, and you'll know it when you see it....;)

Blessings...crni

The job I turned down has offered the position to someone else...if she declines, the position is mine. I hope things work out somehow. I am really just devastated right now...not so much because of the job, but I am concerned about paying the bills!

For the first time in years I am thinking about throwing in the towel. I hear Safeway pays well...and they like me in there.

:bluecry1:

 :biere:I have a party for Girl Scouts tomorrow night. Saturday night, my friends are taking me out...and I don't even have to be the designated driver. :biere:

And if your Safeway is UFCW like ours, you'll get better bennies than hospitals offer!!

If a person uses her nurse manager as a reference, just how much can that nurse manager say? Some places have you sign on the application that you have given permission for them to talk to your current boss. So, if you don't sign it, why would they want to hire you? Even if you state your current boss doesn't know you are looking at other work? How do you get around that?
