They rescinded my job offer...

Nurses General Nursing

I quit one job, turned down another job, went through drug testing, physical agility testing, and everything but orientation and they rescinded the offer. I don't know what I am going to do now...

:bluecry1:

I hope you get the job. Didn't they offer you a position in another department if they won't hire you for the one you applied for? There is a nursing shortage and I'd think it irresponsible to let an RN go.

About reference checks ... I know managers will make phone calls under the table if they know someone from the one of your other places of employment. Of course they do .... I know I was declined from at least one job years ago because of this. This was in a large city, too; the HR people and nursing managers all knew each other. It is nearly impossible to prove these calls take place, however.

When filling out applications (lately it's been for travel nurse agencies) I put the HR phone number down for the phone number for the manager of where I've worked. However, I've had recruiters ask for the name of the manager of the floor I've worked. I found out they will call the floor for a reference. I told one of these recruiters NOT to do that, it's illegal, and these people will not take kindly to multiple phone calls about me!

So these people have sneaky ways of getting references.

please do not use that reference again. best of luck to you. you will be a ok

they just said it was based on reference checks. we discussed that in the interview and i told them that one might be unfavorable. i think i am going to throw up.

tomorrow, i will start looking again. i am just devastated right now.

I discussed the reference that is less than good at my interview. I was very direct about what happened and what I have done to prevent it from happening again. I accepted full responsibility for everything. The unit manager and peer interview team said they really appreciated my honesty and willingness to accept responsibility. I guess HR didn't get that message. :(

I actually did apply at Safeway...they have an online application process, so I filled it out. We shop at Safeway A LOT, so they know me pretty well. I even got a note from the manager once because we hadn't been in for a couple of weeks.

Be grateful you don't have to deal with your state board.

I live in RI, the most corrupt state in the country and the worst BON ever.

I am starting to think people don't know what they are doing at times.

I have learned the hard way beaurocracy and explanations don't mesh.

If you have a reference that does not speak favorably of you, don't use them. I'm not trying to sound deceitful, it's just that even if your in the right the details never count even if you were presented an opportunity to explain. It won't matter. Unfortunately, the healthcare system is primarily black and white and we live in the reall world which is all grey.

Maybe i'm wrong but I don't feel that I am.

Most places will now NOT give out unfavorable references but just give out dates of employment. I'm really surprised at this.

Maybe that is so OFFICIALLY but "off the record", don't kid yourself. There are no secrets in our lives any more.

That sucks... they should at least tell you what the problem is since they already offered you a job!

I was thinking the same thing. Have you asked specifically? And have you talked to the person next higher on the ladder of command? Maybe it will do no good. Then again, you don't know unless you try. If you want the job that much.

I got a call for an interview for a paramedic position. We'll see what happens...

I'm sorry things are not going well for you on the job front. :icon_hug:

I hope it all works out for you. If you have enough references, I'd drop the bad one. Good luck to you, darlin'!

the real harm is to the self esteem you have to have confidence that this was their loss

Something better will turn up, CJ. I know it.

regarding references- It may be a good idea to have someone call all the references you give like they are obtaining a reference for you. I had quit a job many years ago after my boss kept forgetting to pay me and when he did the checks would bounce!! I had left a secure job for that one, lol! Anyhow, after not getting any offers (being very experienced and marketable) and having one place say he gave me a bad ref- I had my SIL call him from her insurance agency and he had audacity to give me a very bad reference!! I called Dept of Labor (had an open claim) and told their caseworker who then called did the same with her! It increased his fine and penalties A LOT and the DOL said he better be honest as they may just call periodically to check that he is!

I just deleted him from my reference list and had no trouble getting a great job after that!

He ended up losing his real estate broker's license and franchise partially over the stuff he was pulling on me.

Best of luck in your job search!

I forgot one thing. There are facilities that use private security companies. They go so far as to check out an applicant's credit report.

It confuses me,i'm sure there are alot of nurse's out there that are good and some point in their lives had financial issues.

I've come across nurse's that were on the dean's list in college, on their second or third degree with perfect everything that I wouldn't let take care of my dog.

I can only speak for myself when I say...I believe that a nurse who has experienced ups and down's make them a better nurse's.

Three of the best nurse's I have had the pleasure to work with had declared bankrupcy and the other two had experienced drug issues.

I remember having a heart to heart one night and she told me how difficult it was to get anyone to hire her. Even though 8 years has gone by she is still judged. All I can see is she is a very caring person, loved by patients and their families, coworkers etc.

Does she deserve to be judged on her past or the present?
