1. how long have you been a nurse? 34 years

2. what motivated you to choose nursing as a profession? money--no, really! as a young woman i needed a job that would pretty much guarantee me a decent income. this was in the 1970s and there weren't many jobs that had great job security and a measure of professionalism. there were still a lot of careers that were off-limits to women. so it was teacher, secretary or nurse. i didn't want to teach and i couldn't type, so nursing it was.

3. what branch of nursing did you choose? i started out in l&d and dabbled in er & med/surg until i found newborn nursery. that lead to nicu which lead to picu which lead to telephone triage which lead to school nursing. i've been in some branch of peds for about 25yrs.

4. what is the most rewarding aspect of your job? working with elementary school children is very rewarding. you can't always go by their main complaint. "stomach ache" means many different things, from "i drank my choc milk too fast" to "i think i'm going to vomit" to "a dog scared me". the younger students often do not know how to articulate what's wrong so i have to be a detective. sometimes the "story" is pretty interesting and not what you'd expect. i enjoy educating my young diabetic students and caring for my special needs students. i love that my day is predictable and steady.

5. what is the least rewarding? dealing with abused children. i never really get over the anger at parents who would willingly harm their children and i am willing to help prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. oh, and poopy pants! bleah. not loving the poop.

thank you!

3. what branch of nursing did you choose?

well, what i wanted to do and what i am doing are two different things. i'm in med/surg because it's my rut.:lol2:

1. How long have you been a nurse?

3 years

2. What motivated you to choose nursing as a profession?

After being disillusioned in the corporate world in a high paying career, and then being a SAHM to my children, I wanted a job that would offer me part time, flexibility, and a chance to really make a difference in someone's day

3. What branch of nursing did you choose?

Med-surg, with emphasis on caring for post surgical patients

4. What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Really making a difference in someone's day or life, by being compassionate, meeting their needs, and having patients tell me how grateful they were to have me as their nurse

5. What is the least rewarding?

Dealing with obnoxious families. And for some reason, it is almost always the adult daughters that are the worst. It's moreso the patient's families that seem to have unrealistic expectations. They don't understand how hospitals function or what the nurses actually do.

3. what branch of nursing did you choose? first the or, then several others.

4. what is the most rewarding aspect of your job? i do enjoy helping other people. i think mainly, though, at this point, i'm earning a living for my family and nursing is the field that i know best and that pays the best. that does not mean i dislike it or that it's only about the money. it's just that that's where my head is at this point in my life.

5. what is the least rewarding? nursing is extremely stressful. several reasons: the constant threat of lawsuits, the hours of boredom interrupted by crises; suits making decisions without bothering to include input from the front line grunts (this is not unique to nursing.); the pay is nowhere good enough. stool, vomit, urine, sweat, mucus, blood, odors, backbreaking lifting, bosses who are disrespectful and who lie, bully, and play favorites; ungrateful, rude patients and their visitors; being understaffed, being unable to give the best possible care because a nurse has too many patients, having to settle for giving adequate care only; many more reasons, just read here on allnurses.
