STR8 vs Gay Male RN

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey all,

I'm a 43 y/o first year nursing student and am wondering about the percentage of straight vs gay male nurses. I'm attending a very small college with six males in our class, one of whom is gay. Noone seems to care but I was wondering what the prevelance of gay male RN's is in the hospital setting, and is it a generally non-issue with other healthcare team workers?

What's the big deal? Don't you have more important things to worry about? And lastly, not sure if you are a man or woman, but PLEASE, PLEASE, stop using the term "male nurse". We're all nurses regardless of gender.....

Why are you asking? What are you so worried about?

Ah life! Welcome to Allnurses! I see this is your second post, so wanted to welcome you here. :balloons:

To answer your question, I have worked with nurses whose gender is male who are homosexuals. The ones I've worked with have been excellent nurses. Their sexual preference does not make the nurse, it is who they are inside that makes the nurse.

It would be better for you to forget about dividing men in this category when it comes to nursing (or anything else). What you will pray for....BIG TIME....is that you will always get to work with excellent nurses no matter their sexual preference.

My question to you is why does it matter, and why do you wish to know? Will having to work with nurses who gender is male and they happen to be gay influence how you will treat them once you are a nurse? How do you treat the man in your nursing class who is gay?

Perhaps you begin by asking yourself questions to search your own heart about your reasons for wanting to delve into that topic. Why don't you tell us how it affects you? Your decision to be a nurse? etc.? :nurse:

To the OP:

All depends on the area and the personalities of those around, it's hard to pinpoint what the reaction would be.

Besides, the way it is on my floor, personal lived are kept out of the workplace, gay or straight.

hello ah life

welcome aboard.

i am going to suggest that maybe ah life has legitimate reasons to be asking this question. i don't get the feeling that the post was intended to be disrespectful...nor do it think it is a pointless question. i am going to assume that it isn't idle speculation either.

i'm a gay nurse (albeit female) and i can say that i have not noticed any difference in the way that my co-workers respond to me vs. straight nurses. however, i live and work in a tolerant place with a significant gay population & i am certainly not the only visibly gay nurse, so my positive experience may not be representative.

judging from the responses from the vast majority of posters on any thread regarding GLBT issues on these boards, i believe that the vast majority of nurses don't give much thought to their co-workers' sexual orientation....they are much more concerned about whether their co-workers can do the job or not. and this seems to be true whether or not they personally perceive homosexuality as truly ok. i have been quite impressed with many posters' ability here to put their own personal views aside in order to make room for all kinds of perspectives. i said it before & i'll say it again...i love nurses!

however, i have also worked in some settings where i would not have felt at all comfortable being 'out' about my orientation... depending on the social/work environment, i do suspect that there are times that GLBT nurses who are open about their orientation aren't well-received. i haven't had that experience personally, though.

and i really have no idea what the percentage of gay vs straight 'male nurses' is- nor do i have any idea what the ratio of gay vs straight 'female nurses' is. i am curious to know what purpose that information would serve for you ah life?

now then.....i (and some others posting in this thread) would really appreciate it if you would clarify why you are asking these questions!
