Rant - How should *I* know?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

There is a trend going on here lately where random people come on here and ask really specific questions.

Y'all need to stop it. It makes you look lazy and stupid.

Pick up the phone and call the appropriate people. Don't ask random strangers on a message board.

How in the heck should *I* know what the schools in your area require to get in? Call the admissions office and ask them. And hope it doesn't change before you finish high school.

How should *I* know what benefits you should expect as nurse once you get out of nursing school? Call the local hospitals/clinics/wherever and ask them. And hope it doesn't change before you graduate.

How should *I* know what the hiring practices are for your local hospital, when you are completely anonymous and could be from Taiwan for all I know? Call the local hospital's HR department and ask them.

You've all seen deeply specific questions on here.

Sometimes I wonder if people have forgotten how to communicate. In this age of social media, do people just not know how to ask anymore?

Is every question a group question now? Should you post random questions on different message boards and expect an answer?

Why wouldn't you contact the actual peope who KNOW the answers?

I am baffled.

Can't "like" this enough. Sometimes it's all I can do to just pass on the thread and not make a snarky "how in the h*** would any of us know that?"

Personal favorite: "Will nursing school be hard?" Well, considering that *I* have no clue as to your IQ, your educational background/preparation, your study habits or your family situation, I would simply have no way of knowing.

Seriously.

My favorite is "should I go into nursing" or "what kind of nurse should I be". It's everything I can do to get my hands off my keyboard.

Sometimes it seems like people mistake AN for Google.

The type of posts you mention often make me want to reply super snarkily.

How about the ones asking if someone should have a baby or not? I want to reply that if you feel the beef to ask a bunch of random strangers on the internet about this, the answer is probably No!

Thank you so much for this perfectly-said post!!! I hate the posts that ask things like that!!!

Don't forget the ones asking about med school. It's called All Nurses for a reason...

Thank you!!!

The school questions baffle me. How hard is it to just talk to an advisor at said school!!!

Yes. My answer to that one is YES, and you should trying start right now.

I have asked questions like those on here before.

Sure, I could Google the question and find out the answer, but by posting my question here, I get to engage with the AN community. It also opens up the conversation for others to add their personal opinions as well as the reasons behind the answer. Also, there are a lot of people on here that do enjoy sharing their knowledge and answering silly questions for those of us that have no clue.

So, sure I could probably google some of my stupid questions, but then why would I come here?

I enjoy reading other people's questions and answers.
