I am curious. How many nurses are the full time primary household earner? In other words, if you quit your job for a lessor paying job, would your currnet housing/health insurance/food on the table situation fold?

I am the primary/sole wage earner in my family. My husband has been unemployed for 2 years. Even when I was working part time as a PCA I carried the health insurance for my family of 5. Talk about some tiny paychecks...

I am single and have no other financial support. If I lost my job, it would be a big problem. I carry the health insurance for me and my daughter who is a grad student. Oct 1011 I will no longer carry insurance on my daughter because she will be too old and should have a job to support herself by then.

My family is most likely in the minority. I am the primary breadwinner simply because we did the math. Our children are young enough that daycare costs AT LEAST $100 per day for 2 kids. To that we had to add before and after care for our first grader. When we did the math we realized I could work, get insurance and overall bring home more than he could as a geneticist or any other similar science related job. I work a ton of hours to support our family, but hubby is as good a parent as I could ever hope of being! :heartbeat
Previous to my graduation we survived by living very frugally on his income. We could do it again and our kids are still so young they wouldn't remember anything different.

I am single right now but have always made more than my boyfriend, who just finished his Master's degree. Now that he has a new job, he makes within $10,000 of me, but I still make more. However, as I am trying to go back to school, we both know that when we are married and I have a MSN I will be the primary breadwinner. I am fine with this plan as I know he will contribute in some way, be it financial or other means of support.

I'm the primary breadwinner since I'm single. If I don't work, I don't eat. Thank God I'm a nurse (good job). :)

We make about the same...but he works more hours a week, we would be okay if one of us lost their job.

I live alone right now but when I marry my boy he'll be the primary breadwinner. He makes double what I do and does shift work, too!

We bring home about the same but he has no insurance, so he and my daughter are on mine. If I didn't have to pay for insurance, I would be working on my wish list!

I'm the primary breadwinner as I'm a widow with 2 teens. My kids do get Social Security Survivors Benefits but I still have to work.

I'm the primary wage earner and insurance provider. Hubby works in retail for minimum wage, though he's looking for something better.

I'm single with no spouse, boyfriend, or any decent prospects for a mate at the present time. Therefore, I'm the primary breadwinner for my single-person household.
