Need new job - NO MORE HOSPITAL!

I need some ideas. I cant work in the hospital any longer :banghead:I have been working med\tele for 6 years and I dont want to work with such acuity any longer. I would ideally like to work 10hr shifts, no weekends, no holidays. I could do mon-fri 8 hr too. I know there are so many options available to nurses but I need some more ideas. Any input would be appreciated. I would go for more schooling if needed (i have my BS)

Well, how about the cath lab, dialysis or EP lab? How long have you been a nurse? No weekends/holiday jobs are hard to come by. Have you decided whether or not you want to pursue a MSN?

Also same day surgery centers have day shift hours and no weekend,holidays but it's quite a different setting than the hospital. I couldn't quite convince myself that I can get away from the hospital just yet.

I would second the same day surgery suggestion. Also dialysis, EP lab, Case management, Hospice, Home health, Clinic nurse, Community health, School nurse. M-F jobs / no weekend/holiday jobs can be hard to come by.

Most jobs in cath lab, dialysis or OP lab require on-call committments. Meaniing you get called in at 1 a.m. to do a case, sometimes there for 3 hours or more, then are required to also work your day job. I worked in a cath lab in the past, and from my perspective, it is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire if you are trying to do fewer nights/weekends/holidays. I did MORE instead.

Case management, utilization review - in a hospital setting, you may still need to do weekends for these, but they are often 8 hour shifts. Did case management for a few months (then had to move) and enjoyed it. NO overtime was permitted, unless asked to pick up a shift to cover for someone who was ill. Have been trying to get into CM in my new location, tough to do with such little experience in my past. Insurance companies and others also hire case managers, so if you can break into the area, it can be a good career route to go.

yea i'd be tried of hospotal too if i was working in med/tele as well...

That's my schedule. I'm a community health nurse, 10 years now. That's 520 three day weekends.

It took me quite a while but I applied for every state nursing job I was even remotely qualified for. Get your state job listings ...most are online now... and follow them regularly. Your state probably has an office of state employment....ask them for a nursing job listing for your state (you can't look for a job that doesn't exist).

At least here, I found a real treasure trove of odd ball nursing jobs. I'm not saying there are a million of these but it pays to look.

Thanks for all the replys! But I really dont want anything to do with the hospital system, not even case management. I am very interested in case management but it seems for many jobs they want experience. Im looking for ideas out of the ordinary like health coaching etc. I love working with people , I love being a nurse. I just don't want the stress of acute situations anymore! Im 25 and I would like to set myself up for a job that I want to do longterm. I want to go to work and have a set lunch break and know that im going to be done at 5 or whenever not 6 or 7 because somebodys heart rate dropped etc. I've recently started checking out the state sites. I think thats more down my ally.

Sounds like a community health job in CM or a mental health clinic might be good options. You might check out CraigsList.org for nursing jobs as they listed many that were non-hospital jobs when I searched last.

What about assisted living. I did assisted living in a small retirement community as an assistant and thats when I found I wanted to be a nurse. Its basically home health in an apartment complex. But you get to know your residents, you follow thier problems, you can pick up early on when something is going on. I just got away from the hospital and am doing assisted living pt, 8 hour shifts.....its so nice compared to the hospital its not even funny
