Need help - Too many meds prescribed for ADHD??
I have a nephew that was diagnosed with ADHD at age 4 or 5. My sister left his dad shortly before that and had multiple live in boyfriends/moved around a lot and now lives off the system, jobless and depressed. Im sure that doesn't help my poor nephews attention problems but since age 5 he has been on some type of med. It started with concerta but after visiting my nephew he seemed zoned out. He just told me he was tired. I asked my sister what he was on and I am just appauled. I work with adults and even with the occasional psych pts I get they aren't on as much as he is. I would like to know from a pediatric nurse perspective if what he is on is what you encounter... Concerta 54mg QAM Effexor XR 37.5mg QAM Tenex 2mg TID Zyprexa 5mg TID Here is the kicker - Methylin ER 10mg a 2pm ( My sister didn't even know what this was!!! RITALIN!) Then Trazadone 75mg at night When I read about these dosages in kids, effexor and zyprexa aren't even FDA approved for kids!! plus he is on singulair and claritin for allergies He just turned 13 this month and my sister said they just diagnosed him with OCD too!! Starting to keep clean all the time. Im really worried. They live in NY and I live in california so it's really difficult. I know my sister's parenting skills aren't the best and my nephew is having to pay for it. Even worse she has a 5 year old right now with a different father and started to say she thinks he has adhd - HES A NORMAL 5 YEAR OLD!!! Im asking please please to let me know what you think about these meds. Thank you for taking the time to read, ~seriously worried aunt

Need new job - NO MORE HOSPITAL!
Thanks for all the replys! But I really dont want anything to do with the hospital system, not even case management. I am very interested in case management but it seems for many jobs they want experience. Im looking for ideas out of the ordinary like health coaching etc. I love working with people , I love being a nurse. I just don't want the stress of acute situations anymore! Im 25 and I would like to set myself up for a job that I want to do longterm. I want to go to work and have a set lunch break and know that im going to be done at 5 or whenever not 6 or 7 because somebodys heart rate dropped etc. I've recently started checking out the state sites. I think thats more down my ally. Thanks for the input, Melanie

Need new job - NO MORE HOSPITAL!
I need some ideas. I cant work in the hospital any longer :banghead:I have been working med\tele for 6 years and I dont want to work with such acuity any longer. I would ideally like to work 10hr shifts, no weekends, no holidays. I could do mon-fri 8 hr too. I know there are so many options available to nurses but I need some more ideas. Any input would be appreciated. I would go for more schooling if needed (i have my BS) Thanks everyone!!:nurse:

McKesson Job Opportunity
Hi erin, Im looking at getting out of the hospital and I saw an opening at genex for CM. Do you have to have experience in CM? I only have 6 years acute care experience but I need to do something else and looking at my options. Did you work from home? If you could tell me a little bit about it I would really appreciate it. Thanks! Melanie

Hi San Diego!
I actually just took a permanent position here at UCSD hillcrest. I didnt like Thornton becuase of multiple reasons. No blood drawer, no transport aid. A lot of patients are "up scale" and want "up scale" treatment when you dont have the help. It makes the staff more uptight too. I was just miserable there. Just my personal opinion. And we just got a 6% raise with our new union contract. They use a pay scale that goes by years of experience. Hope that helps!!

Overnight Shift Rut, help!
I am so in the same boat! I was good for 6 months and now my body has had enough! I switched to days because Im just so run down and sick!!! I have one more night shift to go and I CANT WAIT!! After so much benadryl your body gets used to it. Im so sick of either sleeping to go to work or sleeping because I worked. Im picking up an extra shift as registery to make up for the differential lost. I think ill feel better working 4 12's days that 3 12's nights. Good luck!!

Moving to San Diego, CA: where should I work?
Being a traveler here i have worked on every floor (travelers float first!!) but I am not an ICU nurse so I do not know personally. However I have 2 close friends here that work in the ICU float pool. Which ICU are you going to apply for SICU, BICU,NICU.. any which way they have been in there positions as travelers for a year and i dont really here them ever complain. As for management Im sure they dont get too involved with that. I know they make there schedule and usually get what they ask for. I am actually going to start working on 11east as a staff nurse come january when my contract is up. The management on the 6ths floor and 11\10th have been great. Hope that helps!!

Being a staff nurse vs and traveler is totally different. Ive been a traveler in san diego for a year now and have heard horror stories of kaiser expecially there ER. BUT everybody has different experiences everywhere. I can tell you I work at UCSD and have heard the ER is a great place to work - filled with travelers. I also lived down the street from qualcomm in the condos my company set me up with a liked it alot. I recently moved to the beach though because I didnt travel to cali to live near shopping plazas! Hope that helps:trout:

I really want a job in field case management! Help!
You sound very educated on this position. I have been and RN for 6 years now and have been traveling for 1 year. Recently I was offered a case management position and very interested in doing it. The thing is I dont know the community im working in and what it has to offer. Can you really do CM work without knowing the area?

Do u know any hospitals that may pay off my Nursing student loan of $40,000?
Im doing some traveling out in san diego right now and was shocked to find out there is a waiting list to get into school. I grew up in NY and you can get right into school. ALSO over 40K for school... mamma mia.. My damage=16,000 for a bachelors degree! And any hospital there will pay for your tuition as long as you work for them for 2 years... Just wanted to share how the other side of the country lives :)
