Nurses General Nursing

Published

hello everyone, i am a senior in high school about to graduate soon, i am special ed just to put that other there i process things a bit slow but nothing too serious, i have always had an absence problem which would explain my grades and weak areas of learning. i do make it to the honor rolls every here and then i make up my work and i manage to get some A's but mostly B's and C's. oh and im not good at math (i hate it) and im not good in science(Hate it). i am very anxious for college, i am very undecided on what i want to do in general! i don't know if i should go to a community college and take remedial classes and the transfer to a four year or just go to a four year college? i want to study Nursing i don't know what area of nursing i want to do yet but to be honest with you all, i don't really have a "passion" for it shall i say, i'm just interested and i would not mind it and ALSO because nursing is a field where your always going to be needed and you make a decent salary. i REALLY don't see myself in anything else such as business or anything. I know that Nursing is NOT easy its very competitive and time consuming.. Here are the colleges that i applied to: Lehman college( parents really want me to attend here) Hunter college (i doubt i will get in).. NYC Tech, la guardia cc, queens college and bronx cc.... can anyone please give me some honest in sight and advice about this.. do any of these colleges have good nursing programs which do you recommend and do i have a chance?!

i would appreciate your answers!

Thanks

HHHMMM, If nursing is your passion you should go and seek out the programs these colleges have to offer. Nursing is extremely challenging and when in the field you need the ability to think outside the box and alot of times it's under pressure. You kind of have to process things fast. Or atleast thoroughly. Just keep that in mind.

My father graduated from Hunter college, but in criminal justice and many many years ago. I didn't know they had a nursing program. But look into the colleges.

Good luck in whatever you chose.

Honestly, if you hate math AND science, why would you go into nursing when you don't have a passion for it? It is a challenge when you love math and science AND have really want to be a nurse. I would look at other avenues or maybe become a CNA first to get a feel for what nurses do. Good Luck!

Hi NYstudent24,

I'm from the west coast so I don't know about any of the colleges you just mentioned. But I just want to give you an honest advice (which you can choose not to take. :)). If you hated math and science in high school, I strongly advice against doing nursing. Nursing is all math and science. I know it seems like the most stable career you can enter right now but that alone shouldn't be the deciding factor into entering it. You're going to end up hating it because of the subject matter. If a career in a helping profession is something that interest you, social work and special education are two of the most stable ones right now (check out http://money.usnews.com/money/careers/articles/2010/12/06/best-careers-2011-social-service-jobs). They're usually understaffed, specially in inner cities. You can also utilize the career center at whatever college you attend in determining the best career that will fit you.

If you feel strongly about giving nursing a try, maybe try volunteering at a hospital or getting a certificate as a cna or medical assistant to get a feel for working in a hospital or clinical setting. Just know that your dislike of math & science may present even more challenges than what nursing already gives.

Good luck! I hope you figure out what career is the best fit for you.

First off Congrats! Senior year was the best for me...Way back when LOL! If you are struggling in some subjects I would definitely go with a community college before going to a 4 yr University. It will help you keep up with your studies no matter what field you decide to go into. It will also save you and your parents money in the long run. Secondly, You should really put more thought into what kind of career you are interested in. Yes, there will always be a need for nurses but it's not something you should jump into without being 100% sure it is what you want. If it's the money aspect that you are looking at then I hate to tell you this but it's not always that great. Nursing school is, well words can't explain how difficult and draining it is. You will have to spend your every waking minute studying, preparing for clinicals, working on case studies...the list goes on. The same can be applied to any field you choose to go into. Take some time and really THINK about where you want to be in the next 10 years. I know that seems like a long way away but believe me when I say, it is not. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do!

If you do not like science, you may have trouble on the path to a nursing career. Most of the classes leading up to a nursing program are sciences and sciences are going to be your most difficult classes going through the prerequisites to being accepted into a nursing program

Nurses are having a VERY hard time finding jobs right now. They are not immune from the economic turndown. As the others mentioned, nursing school is very hard, but being a nurse is even harder. It's very stressful. Honestly, from your post, it doesn't sound like nursing would be a very good fit for you. Have you ever shadowed a nurse for a day? Do you have an advisor at school that you can talk to about career paths?

I agree with the above post. If you are not passionate about nursing...it would be a waste of time for you to try to fake it. Also, there are enough nurses out there who seem like they are not passionate about nursing and are just in it "for a job". You are young and have plenty of time to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life...just take some time to think about it and re-evaluate the reasons that you would consider nursing. If you want to do it, make sure it comes from the heart because the patients can easily tell which nurses were truly meant to be and which ones are just faking it!

I don't think you need to have a 'passion' for nursing to be a good nurse. I definitely don't have a passion for it, but most of my pts commend me on my 'compassion' and how I'm such a good nurse. Plus, I regularly get nominated by pts for nsg awards at my hospital. Nursing is just a job to me... and MANY others. It's not that I don't like the job (definitely don't love it, though), but at the end of the day, it's just a job to me. Nothing more, nothing less.

To the OP: Idk any of the schools you mentioned, so no comment there. As for math and science, in my opinion, the math required for nursing is very easy. The science also isn't too bad. If you're sure you want to put yourself through the stress of nsg/nsg school, go for it and get a tutor if you need it.

I highly suggest community college to start, go with remedial classes where needed, you might just find a niche there also, my brother did in creative writing and high school teachers thought he could not even write a proper sentence. he is actually now a communications major and writing a book on his struggles and successes.. Once you get your basics out of the way.. rethink how you feel then about math and science.. If you still "hate" them then talk to counselors and take career tests that suggest fields for those who do not care for math and science..

I will not open the debate over whether a nurse needs a "calling" or not.. but I think most will agree nursing is not the best field for someone who hates math and sciences.. There are many other jobs, computers, technology for example that pay well and offer a decent lifestyle. And I know you say no to business now but I do not know if you realize how much "Business" covers. It is not merely retail and even healthcare is a business.

Best of luck with your college choice and in your studies.

Well thank you hopefulwhoop ur response is what i was looking for! I think i will be fine if i get tutored for math and science and im set to go! I know that if i put my mind to it i can do it. My aunt is a LPN and she went to a cc and HATES math and science but told me that its not that bad my aunt doesnt have any kids is very stubborn and is not passionate lol and shes a nurse! Shes gets tired for her daily work but hey thats life! Works at a private clinc. My brothers girlfriend didnt graduate high school did her GED did a 2 yr nursing program and is now a phlebotomist drawing blood from patients and shes making alot of $$$ and is of course drained but like i said hey! Thats life lol. So with ur advice that you just gave boosted up my comfidence i will work on my math and science (im getting a tutor anyway) and im going to work really hard and put my mind to it. I just want to do somethig and be something and have a job and make decent $$. I am the first one in my family that is graduating high school and attending college so i will not give up! I am determined to be successful! :) :nurse:

I went to Lehman college. Its a good program n intense. If you are really willing to go for an intense program u have to b committed. I would say go for ur bsn directly cos most hospitals aren't hiring adn's any more. Nursing is intense n its full if science n maths so b sure before u commit to it
