Melts in Your Hand, but Not in Your Mouth

When I started out as a C.N.A. my first job was in a LTC facility. I had always wanted to be a nurse and my mother was ADON and convinced me to begin with being an aide. I had grown up in nursing homes since that is where my mom preferred to work. I was comfortable there and not scared of the screamers or the residents that would grab at you when you walk down the hall. I thought that I had seen most of it all. Melts in Your Hand, but Not in Your Mouth

Plus, I had heard many many stories my whole life that centered around the funny and sometimes crazy tactics that residents would pull, but was I ready for what lies ahead?

I went on to C.N.A. training and completed the course in what seemed like record time (it was actually 4 weeks but felt like 4 days). Before I knew it I was in the hall and filling water pitchers, passing food trays, changing beds, and assisting residents to the bathroom along with many other duties.

I felt right at home and treated all the residents like they were my grandparent. I loved them all and knew many of the residents well since my mother had been working at this facility for several years and I had often visited on my free time.

One particular lady, I will call her Ann, decided she wanted to "adopt" me as her grandchild. She was very sweet but suffered from severe dementia. She had run a gift shop back in her younger days and would always try to give me things.

One day she would be handing the remote to her television thinking it was a new radio. The next she would tell me she got in some beautiful new fabric and hand me a pair of her panties!

You just never knew what she would come up with. Well on one particular day I go into her room and she tells me that she got an amazing new delivery. She goes over to her bureau and pulls out a box of chocolates.

She tells me that they are from Belgium and that I just have to try one. Not wanting to be rude and knowing that it is usually best to just go along with her and accept the gift (normally I just put it back later when she doesn't realize it)

I take one of the chocolates from her.

I leave the room and unwrap the candy only to find that she has individually wrapped up her bowel movement!

I couldn't stop laughing.

I then ran to the nurses' desk and told my charge nurse that she just had to go see Ann's new arrival of sweets but not to eat any before I came back. I then ran out to my car and got a gift sack and went back into the facility.

I went to Ann's room and outside the door, my charge nurse was dying laughing she had discovered what little treasure Ann had. We had to get those out of Ann's room before they fell into the wrong hands and someone popped one in their mouth before looking.

I went into the room and told Ann that I had an interested buyer in her candy and I had the perfect gift bag to put her candy box in. She bought the idea and said she just knew that they would fly off the shelves!

I learned that day to never ever take anything, that a resident shows or gives to me, at face value.

OH how so very true! I had a dementia lady who had been given metamucel to make her bowel motions have more form (she has IBS and often has loose bowel motions) ... well, one day, we saw her eating an oreo or something similar, until we got closer ..... yes, you got it. She had retrieved her bowel motion from her incontinence aid, patted it into a round cookie type shape and ........... (*shudder*) was eating it. When she offered some to the carers, the look of horror on their faces was obvious ....... one little non-compliant patient was raced into her room, teeth and mouth wash, shower, ewwwwwwwwwwww I still shudder........ lol

Rule of thumb at my hospital is "never take anything that isn't wrapped" yes, well, I'll be telling them to watch out for just this case now ! LOL LOL
