Mandatory meeting with employee relations?

Not sure if this is the right spot to post....

Got an email yesterday from my nurse manager telling me to set up a "mandatory" meeting with Employee Relations in HR "at my earliest convenience."

Any clue as to what this could be? I think if they would have wanted to fire me immediately for some reason, they would have done it after my shift instead of asking me to schedule a meeting. Thoughts? Stressing over this!

I wasn't given any hints as to the reason for the meeting, and I can't think of any situations that would warrant a meeting. Others were saying maybe I was a witness to something or maybe it's a "broader" issue; I know of no one else asked to meet. I get a long with all my co-workers and do an honest job so I'm really stumped.

Some others said if they wanted me immediately fired (for whatever reason) they would probably set up a managerial meeting, The fact that this is all going through HR has me puzzled.

Anyone been in this situation or have any idea of what I may be walking into? I don't even know what employee relations fully does.

How very strange. Sounds like "Dread Pirate Roberts" organizational culture at work ..... "sleep well, we'll most likely kill you in the morning" (The Princess Bride).

I'm with you - there's nothing worse than a mysterious summons from management. It's a really bad way to deal with people.

I would ask my manager what this is in regards to, she should be able to give you a straight answer

If you were in trouble I doubt they would have used language like "earliest convenience," or let you schedule the meeting yourself. They would have said "so-and-so needs to talk to you when your shift is over, make sure you go down there before you leave."

That's what it sounds like to me.

If you have a union, go talk with them immediately.

Find your union rep.

With that being said, it could be about someone ELSE, and they want your take on someone who perhaps you work with.

Even if this is the case, make 500% sure that you have a confidentiality agreement should you decide to speak. Again, talk to your union rep about this.

Your manager should be able to give you a direct answer. Make sure that you listen to what employee relations has to say, and then take a few minutes, decide if you can answer, or simply "I have nothing to contribute" could be a viable option.

Employee relations is usually regarding not so great behaviors. But that doesn't mean it is "against" you. It could be an investigatory process on someone else.

How long have you been at this position? I ask because my facility has HR do set retention meetings, and they are mandatory, occurring at 90 days, 6 months, and 1 year after employment. This was started recently, so us long-timers had no idea they were occurring until someone had to set up an HR meeting and didn't know why who told us after the meeting what it was about.

Either way, the fact that they want you to set the meeting "at your earliest convenience" doesn't speak to a pressing matter.

A couple months short of a year. I would think if it was a general HR follow up/retention meeting it would have been worded differently.

Guess I'll find out on monday :/
