i put in 30 cc of water to a 16 fr 5cc cath...yep.. i did.. so now, what should i do? its been 6 days since i inserted the catheter and its been draining well. no adverses reactions noted or whatsoever. i just realized it now.. should i reinsert a new catheter or should i just get a sterile syringe and aspirate 20-25 cc of water from the catheter that way 5-10 cc of water will be left for the balloon???im anxious....i hope nothing bad happens to the patient. il go back to work tonight and clean up my mess. :( help!!

poor patient prob feels like their bladder is really full. aspirate the desired amount.

somehow, i remember seeing the port 2 nights ago and it says 16 fr 5 cc...then i remember this morning i put in 30cc! im so anxious... im a new grad and that was my first time to insert a foley in a long time.i actually sought help from a more experienced nurse and she told me to go ahead and put in all 30cc. ugh. will, aspirate necesary amount tonight. i hope nothing really bad happens to that patient.

wow thats alot of water.. i'm suprised it didn't burst,, they aren't made to hold that much.. go aspirate the water first thing.. the pt must be uncomfertable.. eek... 6 days .. yikes..

whats the sign that the balloon has burst anyway? the catheter has been draining well.im so anxious now...because the wife of the patient is the type that will sue... o my gosh.

i'm pretty sure the pt would feel it if it burst...

not necessarily painful but would think she'd feel a gush.

and would think the cath would slip out if balloon burst.

just take care of business asap.

for what it's worth, the nurse that advised you to give the 30, scares me as well.

you'll be fine sweetie.

What I think confused you was the printed label on the cath. I believe the capacity of the balloon is 30 cc's, and it should be filled with 10.

As far as the bladder being overfull with an extra 20 cc's, I assume the other poster was kidding. I also doubt that anybody would feel if a balloon catheter ruptured.

My thought: Aspirate all 30 cc's. If any more or less comes out, the balloon ruptured or leaked. Assuming 30 cc's aspirates, inflate with 10 cc's. then, if you want to be really confident, you can pull gently till the balloon touches the neck of the bladder.

Our kits come with a prefilled syringe of like 5-10cc. Did you kit come with a pre-filled syringe? I have on occasion added a little more if the patient is leaking around the catheter. I believe they actually make balloons that hold 30cc those, so it must be for some reason.

don't worry about it.. she's not going to sue.. just go take some water out when you get to work.. if it's draining fine now then don't worry.. luckliy he 's not pulling it out .. he would give himself a turp..lol... sometimes those balloons leak a little so there maynot be the 30cc still in there. , please don't sweat it, i didn't mean to scare you..... you will be just fine and so will he...:heartbeat
