I need a job change! Advice?!

Hi all! I got hired as a new grad at my dream hospital about 5 months ago. I am working on a med-surg unit. I am already feeling like I want to get out and do something else. I try to remind myself that I never wanted to do this in the first place, but I knew it is where I needed to start in order to get experience! I can't help but have a desire to have a goal of where I can go next. I don't want to let this job go because I know how lucky I am to have it but at the same time I know the hospital/acute care setting just isn't for me. All I do when I am off of work is dread going back, which I have been trying not to do, but I don't want to feel that way forever. I want to enjoy work, not dread it!

I am craving a job where I can go outside, work at more of my own pace, and most of all not be in such an intense and stressful environment. Don't get me wrong, I am learning SO much and it is so good for me to be working there, but thinking about being there long term is depressing. I feel like I would have more interest in a home health or public health job. I even researched occupational health at first. But I am not totally sure what they entail.

Long story short, I am writing here to get advice! Anyone have any advice or knowledge on RN jobs outside of the hospital that still make decent money? I am very open to having a 9-5 schedule as well. I just don't have much knowledge about what else is out there!

Any help is appreciated!! :)

Any job that's "easy" and interested in hiring someone with five months of experience is not going to pay well.

Sounds like you are looking for a home health position and, in my opinion, you need more experience first. Stick it out for at least a year.

If you can deal with inmates corrections isn't as demanding physically but although there are many 6a-2p positions it is staffed 24 hours per day and positions are bid based on seniority. The pay in CA for state prison is amazing with good benefits and retirement but like I said, criminals...manipulation...drama...and mandatory overtime (not often but once in a while). You have to be ready for a riot or hours of downtime. In the words of Forest Gump, "a box of chocolates."

FYI case management jobs require several years of experience.

Perhaps you can think of this year as your final year of nursing school.

We counted down the weeks and days until graduation. Why? Because we wanted out! School was so stressful. There was so much to learn, and the nursing instructors weren't exactly warm & fuzzy.

It probably was for stressful for you, too. But you stuck it out. You graduated nursing school. You did it once; you can do it again.

It must be hard to have to - in a way - go back to school. Even though you knew that first year would probably be rough, you probably figured it wouldn't be this bad.

Stick it out. You can DO this! Then, come work with me in private duty home care. :happy:
