How many jobs have you all held? How long have you been a nurse? What's the shortest time you ever stayed at a job?

Specializes in ICU.

I started in an ICU right after school and I've been pigeon holed in that kind of unit for the past 15 years despite MANY attempts to get out. (other than floating, whereas I've worked a few shifts in just about everywhere)

I am on my 4th job in 8 years. Shortest was 1 yesr, 3 months.

nursing job, that is. Let's not even go there for pre-nursing. :p

First job was as a CNA, and I stayed there almost 4 years. They didn't hire new grads, so I took my first RN job in med-surg and worked my floor for one year. In ICU I have been here 15 years with no plans to move anytime soon because I am happy there.

Specializes in MDS/ UR.

8 days at a LTC. I left after I saw the staff picking out of the food servers. It was the crowning moment of unbelievable for me.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Home Health.

How long have you been a nurse?

5.5 years

How many jobs have you all held?

Including per diem jobs, 7.

What's the shortest time you ever stayed at a job?

45 minutes. It was my first nursing job, at a SNF. I was hired for 11P-7A, 2 nights a week, but they wanted me to orient on days. When I arrived for my first shift, after a 2-hour commute (it was MLK day, so the T was slower than usual), I sat in the DON's office for 20 minutes before I was sent to the day room. After 25 minutes of getting water and spoons for the day nurse, the DON called me back into her office. She said the job was now per diem, and they couldn't afford to have 2 people orienting at once (the day nurse was also orienting), so she was sending me home. She told me to call back the next week and see how things were going. When I called that Friday, I found out the job had been cancelled. I never filled out any HR paperwork, so I was never paid for my 45-minute shift.

Specializes in geriatrics.

I've been a nurse for almost four years. I've had the same job for 3.5 years. I took a course and relocated right after graduation, so I didn't start working immediately.

Currently starting my job search. Change is needed.

Specializes in OB-Gyn/Primary Care/Ambulatory Leadership.

Nurse for 8 years. This is job #4. Shortest job held was 16 months.

Specializes in family practice and school nursing.

med surg right of school for a little over a year, then family practice office for 15 yrs, now school nurse for 13 yrs.

Been a nurse since '89. Shortest job was 2 days, one day of orientation and the next day on night shift. That night was horrible, other nurses just keep saying the worst things about whoever was off and talking about how bad they hated the job....and yes I did let the DNS know why I would not be back.

Specializes in ICU.

I have worked as: convenience store clerk; worked in a cotton mill for one year; worked in sewing plants; sold real estate; was a licensed insurance writer; finally got my business/accounting degree, then worked as office manager, payroll clerk, accountant. Oh, almost forgot, ~ I taught at a business college for one year. I have been an RN for 25 years; worked at 5 different hospitals as full-time employee, and 2 hospitals as prn employee. I have worked mostly ICU (both adult and pediatric). No wonder I am so tired! I am 57 years old, so I guess you can cram a lot of jobs in at that age.
