How do you get your first nursing job, when everyone in NY wants experience?

Hey my fellow RN's,

So I have recently passed boards. And I am having a hard time finding a job. Its only been two weeks. But I have been looking and applying everyday. I write down all the places I apply to and I follow up a week after applying. Most places all just want experienced nurses. I understand but what about the nurses who will take their places, We need work as well.

Does anyone a good place to start, that not afraid of New Grads????

What did you do for your first nursing job?

BTW: I have two friends in hospitals that put in good word and I even know someone high up and still nothing. I dont expect the job to fall in my lap, I am actively searching.

Have you considered moving to a less saturated area to get some experience?

You move to where the jobs are.

If moving is not an option try researching new grad programs and apply when they open. You might also have to commute to a less desirable place until you get some experience under your belt and become more attractive to the hospitals near you.

Best wishes.

You seem to be in a saturated job market, which is pretty common now. Your only option seems to be moving just like half of the workforce of new nurses. Try rural areas, unsaturated low-population type of places, even begin in a nursing home/rehabilitation center like a lot of nurses choose to do. I'm thankful to live in an area that has a high demand, can't really say that in this job market.

Go to where the jobs are. Believe me there are jobs out there. I live in an area that pays very well and has a relatively low cost of living, and the hospital here is hiring 350 more nurses. It's pretty much that simple.

Thank you guys for responding so quickly. :) I have looked at other places like in CT and NJ and upper Westchester. I live in the Bronx Ny and even though I passed my board June 19. Kind of early compared to my other classmates. It's still an issue finding a job. But I will apply for my licence in other states like CT and NJ and see what I can find. oh and I have been to over 20 nursing homes physically bringing my resume and cover letter. Lol

Do you mind my asking if you have a BSN or ADN? I know it can be difficult to get hired at an NYC hospital without a bachelors.

Hi I graduated from a BSN program. I also just called few places about the Fellowships and they said that I just have to periodically check the career section lol.

Did you make any connections with any nurses during your clinicals that you feel comfortable contacting?

You are right, NY does have lots of openings, for experienced BSN, Masters, etc. Are you locked in to the City?

Omgggg I have soooo many connections at least I thought I did. Ppl who work in 5 major hospitals have given my resume to their nurse managers. Also im not locked in NYC thank god I drive and always travel. So I'm willing to go beyond but I still want to see my family and build my life.
