My favorite part about being a nurse is educating people about their condition, our interventions, or on any questions or concerns they may have. I absolutely love teaching about breastfeeding and troubleshooting with parents when they're having issues. I also enjoy giving correct information, as there's so much misinformation out there. I'm a chronic googler, and looker upper. I enjoy learning as much as I do teaching.

As far as the nursing profession as a whole, I love and appreciate that we have options, from being an independent provider to entrepreneurship and everything in between.

Scrubs. I became a nurse because I like scrubs.

(At least, that's what I say in interviews...no callbacks yet...)

Honestly- it has been meeting fascinating people whose paths I would never have crossed had I pursued my first career choice*.

The scrubs are what I miss most now that I'm on the academic side- no joke!)

Having autonomy. I worked in retail as a student and I hated that I was constantly bossed around and not allowed to think for myself. I love for most of my day I make all the decision and can voice my opinion to other health care workers and be valued.

Learning. I love that I'll never stop learning.

Making people comfortable. I love it when you get a compliment that your doing a good job from a pt and get some appreciation for your hard work. Makes all the bullsh*t feel worth it.

Adrenaline. When you have an acutely unwell pt or an emergency and your able to step in and can actually help.

My favorite is normalizing a complicated post-op (art line out, getting off all the gtts, etc), having them walk and getting them discharged. It means our intervention helped and they got better!

Best thing is interacting with patients from all walks of life. I also like most of my coworkers.

The pay is definitely not it for me. RN pay simply isn't great when you factor in the stress, responsibilities, shift hours, and loss of weekends. I was paid far more with much less stress in my previous career.
