Lets all share some positivity!

Whats your favorite part about being a nurse?

xoxo

I love the positivity!

My favorite thing about being a nurse is never having to wonder if my job makes a difference. Sure, there are other things I could be doing for a career that make more money- but I'd rather know I am impacting someone's life than sitting in a cubicle working a worthless job.

I was paid far more with much less stress in my previous career.

What field was that?

Why the switch to nursing?

Specializes in Transitional Nursing.

Getting to educate patients and families about their conditions and treatments. Its amazing how many don't know much about their own healthcare.

Why the switch to nursing?

I just got very bored and couldn't see myself doing it for another 25-30 years. For a couple years I did consider other areas related to what I did but the ones that I had any interest in would require even more quantitative training. I got good with numbers, but at the end of the day I'm just not a numbers guy. I do love the medical field (the science of it and working with patients especially psych patients), and it's just a much better fit for my personality.

I'm a school nurse. My favorite part is educating the kids. Every time I see them I get a chance to teach them something new. I have a few littles with asthma or an allergy or other medical condition, and I work on educating them a little bit at a time while they're in my office. This year a first grader went from forcefully blowing into his spacer every time we tried to give him his inhaler to being able to self administer (with supervision), explain the difference between a bronchodilator and corticosteroid inhaler, and point out the different parts of the lung.

I have considered my career as a nurse a privilege. The fact that we are able to enter a patient's life, provide them comfort, or see them through a difficult time, even become part of the patient's family (even if only for a few hours) on nearly a daily basis is an honor and is amazing to me... Once the student loans were paid off, the money hasn't been bad either!

The best part of being a nurse for me has always been the opportunity to comfort people at a vulnerable time. Maybe it is their first time in the hospital or they are undergoing a major surgery. Maybe it is just sitting next to someone as they are dying. I enjoy just being present for the sick person. Sometimes they just need to talk. I like knowing I make a difference, even for a short period of time, when they are afraid and alone. When someone says to me, "Thank you for being there," or "Thank you for explaining that to me. Now I understand it better." Anyone can learn the technical things, but being compassionate and caring is a gift. Being kind when it may not seem warranted. Loving some of the most unlovely people is what I have done as a nurse. It is not the money, or the benefits, or my fellow co-workers. It is and always has been providing comfort to the people assigned to my care. That to me is the best part of being a nurse. Knowing I have made a difference.

I was going to comment but you just said everything I wanted to say and said it better!
