My father in law passed away last week, and I had to take bereavement Leave. Now our policy states workers get 3 days for immediate family members. I made sure with HR that Father In Law was included with "immediate" family. They assured me this was the case. When I called to let my Director of Nursing Know He died and I would be taking my 3 day leave, she told me to call her the next day to make sure she didn't need me to work:madface:. I almost quit my job:banghead:. This woman has no concerns for her staff or their personal well fair. All she wants to do is make sure that schedule is filled:down:. I informed her 2 wks ago that my Father in Law's health was failing. I am curious to know what other's policy is and how your NM or DON treated you in same circumstances. I went to the Administrator to get this time off d/t the DON calling me 2 days in a row.

We don't get the death of in-laws off at all...and I'm a government employee. If I wanted to go to an in-law funeral I'd have to use vacation time.
Sorry about your loss.

We get 5 days compassionate leave at the discretion of our managers. As a nurse manager I would give you the leave need to be there to support your family and deal with your own grief.

Since your facility's policy allows for 3 days of leave, it was inappropriate for your manager to call you during that time.
I'm sorry for your loss, and for the aggravation caused by your insensitive boss.

My Grandpa had been in failing health for sometime before he passed away last summer. My job was aware of the situation and knew that I would be taking time off to attend the funeral. Imagine my shock and surprise when I left the funeral only to find a message on my cell phone asking me if I could work. Good thing I had the phone off during the service!

I work the the city and we are granted 5 days bereavement for immediate family, and this includes in laws, but I don't think it includes grandparents, siblings, or cousins.

My dad passed away on Saturday and my employer rang to check on me. Then said I have organised your bereavement leave, don't come back until you are ready.
Just as well because I am barely holding it together.
Nicky.

nicky and beary, sorry for your loss, it is never easy even if you have seen a steady decline
most facilities have a list of family members whose death qualifies for bereavement paid time, usually includes parents, siblings spouses and children..some will include an in-law
most do not include aunts, uncles, neices or nephews but they have to be considerate enough to give sufficient time for travel to and from etc

Our union contract calls for 3 days for immediate family including parents and parents in law.

I am so sorry for your loss.
My purse was ringing at my grandmother's visitation. My sister answered it. It was work, wanting me to come in on 3-11. My sister got so mad, she told them, "No! She is at our grandmother's wake. You will NOT see her until next week," and hung up on them.
Some people just have no sense, or compassion. Maybe both.
