Are nurses changing careers in their mid forties?

Hi, I am a journalism student doing a story on people between the ages of 31 and 50 who want to change to a career in nursing. I see here that there are several as I have been hearing. If anyone would help me I would really appreciate it.....

hello ace,

i'm 32 and in my 2nd semester of nursing school...not sure if i count for your article, i was a bartender, than an office manager for about 6 years, never finished college the first time around so kind of starting a little late, but better late than never right??!!

i chose nursing because of the lives i hope to be a part of even for the short period, the job security is nice, every day will be different from the one before, and it's a career i can go anywhere with...the possibilities truly are endless.

I'm 43 and in my 1st semester of NS. I was an OTR truck driver for 10 yrs.

It's no longer the norm to remain in the same career field throughout 40+ years of working life.

Being a corporate budget analyst suited me in my 20s ... it meant plush offices & dressing up in a suit every day.

After being a SAHM for a few years, suddenly those things didn't hold the same meaning, and the work itself seemed empty and BORING. I reconsidered nursing, which I had talked myself out of years before ... and here I am. :)

Heh ... I was a journalism major way back in the day. :D I spent more than a decade in graphic design/desktop publishing, became a paramedic in 2003, decided I couldn't sit behind a desk any longer, went to work in an ED in 2005, and just became an RN last month at the age of 36. :)

Do you mean you were an occupational therapist Registered? If so, I would like to chat with you as why you switched to nursing since I have an interest in OT--Pros and cons.

At 31 I went from probation officer to nurse. At 42 I went from hospital nursing to community health nursing (no direct care).
