Geez...they're dropping like flies!

i'm a first semester student in a tough private school; i guess it's too tough! a lot of students are starting to drop out like crazy! i'm not excelling but i am passing and besides the busy work i'm not feeling uncomfortable. guess i should consider myself lucky~!

any other first semesters out there see in this in their programs?

A lot of students drop out in the first semester. Many realize during this time that nursing really isn't the profession for them, or the schooling isn't what they expected it would be, or it's not a good time for them to be in school. I think almost all nursing programs lose the most students in the first semester. Not all fail out, but many just realize the program isn't for them.

I agree that people in my class seek out old test questions but they are used as study guides. Definitely don't rely on them. The material is learned and everyone studies their butts off. You cannot tell me that you have never asked anyone what the test was like? What kind of questions are on there? It's the same thing.

Funny I should come across this thread. I was talking with a student I met. She told me that people were leaving or thinking of leaving her nursing program, but not due to grades. They were changing majors because of the lack of nursing jobs.

You have to have an 80% test grade average to pass the nursing courses at my private school, and a 94% is an A. Needless to say, not a whole lot of people have A's....and literally only a handful of people in my pharm class are currently passing, and a ton have dropped. It's hard work learnin' how to be a nurse!

In both my LPN class and my RN class, less than 1/3 of those who started, finished. Not uncommon.

how do you get that? they shred out tests immediately!

they are also probably buddy-buddy wtih the profs and know a lot of the questions to the tests.

and i bet there are copies of old tests floating around. knowing the answers to a few of those questions saved me.

interesting concept... i ponder if those who rely on the old test, will pass their nclexrn?

Fortunately after three test, only one person has dropped out due to nursing not being the profession for them. The semester ahead of us lost about 20 people out of 160.

We started with 82 students.... we graduated with 32.

I'd start getting to be buddy-buddy with the smart people and bringing them cupcakes and buying them coffee. They are also probably buddy-buddy wtih the profs and know a lot of the questions to the tests.

Erm...

How about actually teaching yourself the material?

You don't have to buddy-up to anybody.

Just learn it like everybody else does... because... um... you really kinda need to actually know this stuff.

Sounds to me like you are recommending cheating and relying on the abilities of others to do the work.

Whoa.

Im in my 3rd quarter, and in our first and 2nd quarter, they did drop like flies! Some realized it wasn't for them, some failed.

This quarter, we actually have students who failed the class previously(you fail a class, you come back to retake it in 6 months.)

I think we started with 32, and 6 guys...We are at 27 now(that's minus the ones we lost plus the 9 we just gained), and we have I think 2 guys left.

And yes, looking at old tests is considered cheating..I wouldn't do that!

We started with 40+ people and ended with 13.

I'd start getting to be buddy-buddy with the smart people and bringing them cupcakes and buying them coffee.

I'd rather study and be one of the smart people. That way I can buy my own cupcakes and coffee and eliminate the middleman. I'm cheap like that, though. :D
