Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
the gbon does not have a heart! just my :twocents: worth anyways.
as for moving to another state such as fl, which is practically in my back yard, not an option especailly with what has happened this week with the financal crisis. plus most of us older lpn's are settled in with house, car and other payments that have to be made.
we need full time pay checks to help with our families, so going the old brick and motor route isn't an option that is why most of us chose ec.
but is is funny that one of the local cc in my neck of the woods is starting a completely new approach to online nursing. a very good friend on mine is doing a lpn to bridge and there entire ob/mat and peds classes will be online and only 6 clinincal days for a semester. this is scary because for an entire semester only 6 clinica days to learn this stuff!
it basicaly comes down to some very angry people on gbon and ga wanting the money for itself instead of allowing working people to get their degree from some place else.
so yes ga has no heart in this matter and i really don't see them changing their minds on the whole rn, ec/gbon issues.
plus was told a while back that the facility i use to work at, since there are basically 4 colleges in a 50 mile radious that finding new rn's straight out of school was not a problem, they had a new crop at least 3x a year to recruit from!
so now what does that tell you? those of us going the ec route are out of luck!
Recruiters have told me that new grads are expected to be present at least 5 days/wk for class and clinical training within the first 8-12 weeks. Then I can chose a 12 hr shift of 7a-7p or 7p-7a with rotating weekends. As a parent with a schoolaged child, this will be impossible. Yes I can move eventually, but not at present. I have contemplated my options. I have sought weekends only positions (every Fri Sat Sun) and these are scarce for new grads. In my research I am seeking positions in nearby states and in areas that are close to Ga. Unfortunately as we all know it was not supposed to be this way. I would have never gone the Excelsior route if I had known that this could be a possibility. There are many people at the hospital where I worked who are in this same situation. I don't want to live somewhere that I am limited in my practice meaning can only work at the VA or a jail/prison. Granted I knew about California, however I also know that Ec grads are being reviewed on a case by case basis for licensure in Cali, so that was a chance I was willing to take.Oh and by the way I am researching Fl too.
I was hired for weekend program 12 hour days and only had 2 weeks with full-time training then I started orienting part-time. Wisconsin is EC friendly too. Our hospital does from time to time offer weekend only positions and they don't mind if you're a new grad or not. I cannot imagine how hard this is for those in Georgia. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I hope this all can be resolved soon for the patients sakes as well as the students who are caught up in this mess.:redpinkhe
I hope this is resolved soon. I am waiting in limbo as just as some of you. Decisions need to made in my family based on what they decide. If anyone has any insight on weather on how the meeting goes please post after the meeting or after you hear from the GNA or the college. I know they usually will post or send out a letter. Excelsior stated it be referred to the nov meeting for reconsideration after this meeting if I guessing they like what they hear. I wondering what time this meeting is....I don't want to start calling the GNA, GaBON, or college to eairler but hey I will we need answers.
A primary rule in statistics is rules usually remain the same and do not change.
Therefore, by the forces that be ($$$$$), plan on what is today, since it is more probably the result of tomorrow.
Politics is a slow process, and web ghosts will tell you anything, to activate your fear and greed genes.
This is just bogus politics and it has the GABON written all over it! I may already have my license, but I feel it reflects badly on me because the state is saying they don't approve of the school I graduated from anymore! The fact that my degree is from EC doesn't make me any less of a nurse than someone that went to traditional nursing school.
Welcome to my life. As a Regents [EC] grad living and working as an RN in California (who also refuses to license EC grads, I feel the same way.
We're at the end of the EC era in Virginia, too -- Virginia won't license anyone here after 12/31/2009.
Did I miss something? Is there some evidence out there from some research that suggests that EC grads are not competent or something of the like? I really don't understand where this hostility by BONs towards EC is coming from.

I believe it has to do with this position paper from the NCSBN: https://www.ncsbn.org/Final_Clinical_Instr_Pre_Nsg_programs.pdf
I think that's the root of it, right there. A subtle campaign, but it seems to be having an effect.

Thanks for the reference. Very curious. I wonder where this is heading with the other BON's? In Ga, as it stands now, or in VA soon, could a RN practicing in another state as a RC/EC graduate transfer in via reciprocity or endorsement or do the interpretations only reflect new grads?

Yea I totally feel for you nurses in Georgia! I having been praying for the nurses in Georgia. I think there might be some good that will come out of this meeting on Friday. I can't see them totally denying all of the nurses lic. I mean that would just indicate to me the board of nursing has no heart! Well the hospital that I will be working at has a child care facility on the campus. There is a long waiting list to get in, but the cost of the child care is $40.00 for an 8 hour day. There orientation process is 7 days in classroom and 6 weeks clinical preceptorship.
