Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
"I SPOKE WITH GBON AGAIN AND ASKED IF I AM A RN IN ANOTHER STATE AND WORKING CLINCAL HOURS, I STILL CAN NOT GET ENDORSEMENT BECAUSE I WENT THROUGH EC? YES WAS THE ANSWER, THEN I ASKED SO EVEN IF I HAVE HAD MY RN FOR A WHILE ,OF COURSE WORKING, I STILL CAN NOT DO IT? YES THAT IS CORRECT, YOU KNOW WHAT EVERYBODY, I AM TIRED OF GEORGIA ANYWAY WITH THERE STUPID LAWS. ALOT OF TIMES IT IS WHO YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU KNOW FOR A JOB I RATHER WORK OUT OF STATE I WAS TOLD THAT AS LONG AS YOU ARE A LPN YOU CAN SIT FOR FLORIDA BOARDS WITH NO PROBLEM INFO FROM FBON. AND YOU MAKE MORE. GEORGIA WILL LOOSE A LOT OF GOOD NURSES IF THIS STAND WITH NO RESOLUTION:down: "
I live in Florida and am an EC grad waiting to take my NCLEX. Although our state is not perfect, we would be more than happy to have you. And you are right because I have many friends we moved to GA in the past few years, the pay here is higher (so is the cost of living, but hey you deal, weathers great). My husband had been trying to convince me to move to GA, but I just told him the bad news and since he endured EC with me, we struck it from our list of places to live.
Good luck to you guys are fighting to be recognized by the GABON, people don't realize that EC is just as much hard work as a traditional program since we are required to self learn a lot of things and go to the CPNE already knowing nursing (not just memorizing it through daily repititious clinicals) and if we are capable of passing the NCLEX, GIVE US WHAT WE'RE WORKED FOR!!

I did not know why we would not be able to get endorsed if we worked in another state for a while. Thanks for calling the ga bon and posting their response because that was going to be my next option. Go work in TN where Chatt. is 2 hrs away and then transfer in after experience. I was willing to drive or take a travel assignment for a while but if they will not endorse us I can do that my whole nursing career...so that might me out. What would be the big deal...if we worked in another state for awhile ....that means we would have work experience and know our stuff. I was planning on doing an externship or preciptorship anyways when I graduated to just sharpen and fine tune my skills before I am left working by myself. I clearly do not see that as not being responsible just the opposite. I care for the safety of the patients and that's why myself and maybe others are willing to take extra time and do these things. Well, theirs another meeting this friday....lets see what happens.
Does anyone know if the meeting this Friday with GaBON,GNA, Ec is open to the public? I haven't heard anything specificially regarding details. I honestly don't think we will prevail in this legal fight. It is very disheartening to work for so long then to have all the hard work unrecognized by a BON is very disappointing. I hope in the future Ec is more aware of the actions of various BON's to prevent others from experiencing what the students in Georgia are going through.
Thanks but for me it is almost hopeless here in Georgia. I had already accepted my job as an ICU nurse long ago and have worked on the unit being precepted in a special program for new graduates. Upper management is well aware that I can't be licensed in GA and have asked me for a timeframe that this will be resolved, which I could not provide definite info. My position was released so now I am back at sqare one and looking for another job. I have searched online for jobs in Tennessee and S. Carolina but the schedules most hospitals would require for a new graduate will be almost impossible if not totally impossible. The VA has such a long and extensive hiring process it would be months before I am hired, if I am hired. This is quite frustrating and brings reality that even with RN behind my name finding a job to fit my needs won't be easy.
Goodmorning all,
I found this link on jacksonville.com. I really, really wish that reporters, etc. would gather correct information before thinking they have a news story. This particular item in particular sheds a negative light IMO on EC students. Please read.

Recruiters have told me that new grads are expected to be present at least 5 days/wk for class and clinical training within the first 8-12 weeks. Then I can chose a 12 hr shift of 7a-7p or 7p-7a with rotating weekends. As a parent with a schoolaged child, this will be impossible. Yes I can move eventually, but not at present. I have contemplated my options. I have sought weekends only positions (every Fri Sat Sun) and these are scarce for new grads. In my research I am seeking positions in nearby states and in areas that are close to Ga. Unfortunately as we all know it was not supposed to be this way. I would have never gone the Excelsior route if I had known that this could be a possibility. There are many people at the hospital where I worked who are in this same situation. I don't want to live somewhere that I am limited in my practice meaning can only work at the VA or a jail/prison. Granted I knew about California, however I also know that Ec grads are being reviewed on a case by case basis for licensure in Cali, so that was a chance I was willing to take.
Oh and by the way I am researching Fl too.

AHA!
Like FL, I bet if you find out which states are deleting Excelsior; they will ALSO be the same ones who are starting their OWN DISTANCE LEARNING programs in-state!
If so, FAT CHANCE in getting any State to reduce their income. Education is any State's cash cow, and DISTANCE LEARNING is a whole new Educational industry too for the States. Indiana was just the first.
I would think it would be EASIER and MORE EFFECTIVE to get Excelsior to get STATE approved whatever State they are in!! Otherwise, their cash cow is going to run out of milk eventually!!
