Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
ISU is online. There are several pre-reqs you must complete before applying to the school of nursing. They also utilize some of the EC tests although not the NCs. There is a long thread about this in this forum. Also email the school and they will provide you with an abundance of info. I didn't want to go straight BSN which is why I chose EC but it's looking more promising as time passes.

Thanks. I will look it up.
i wasn't at the meeting but i just watched a report on fox 5 on the internet. the reporter said this may extend all the way out to the end of the year. gosh. my annual enrollement is coming up and will be due before then. does anyone know with our situation do we need to pay the annual enrollment fee or can we wait until a decision has been made. i would hate to pay for it and and the decision is no. i guess i need to call.also, i don't know why the college is not addressing the clinical argument. i keep hearing the ga bon's argument that they are concerned that we don't meet the clinical portion. even though i believe we do why doesn't excelsior start including preceptorship/externships/interships included in the program. alot of hospitals already have these and also i'm sure they would love more free labor. also, some us that work at these place could already extern/intern a few extras week in different depts. the school needs to address this. cali, va, now ga (hopefully not) as well as other states are not accepting the students.
ec will give you an extension on your re-enrollment fee until the matter is settled.
i was at the meeting. i'm not sure why certain issues (such as clinicals) haven't been formally brought up. i guess there is a method to the madness that ec and gna are aware of. i'm glad they have the emotional energy to carry on the fight on our behalf. i'm kind of worn out with it all. this is part of an email letter from ec:
"we have been in discussion with members of the governor's staff as well as the georgia secretary of state and we will continue to pursue support from georgia legislators and employers. in addition, we continue to work closely with the georgia nurses association, which is an important supporter of excelsior college, its students and graduates for many years.
in summary, since the board took no action other than to refer the matter to its education committee, your eligibility to become licensed in your home state remains uncertain. this lack of immediate action by the board is frustrating for all. however, please be assured that excelsior college and the georgia nurses association are working tirelessly on your behalf.
we welcome your phone calls and will be prepared next week to help you consider your personal situation. if not before, you will hear from us again after the board's education committee holds its meeting on october 3, 2008.
sincerely,
m. bridget nettleton, phd, rn
dean, school of nursing"
This is the entire copy of the Excelsior email that i received today.
As you are aware, in July the Georgia Board of Nursing made a decision to no longer license Excelsior College graduates by endorsement, a practice that they have followed for more than 25 years. The Board based this decision on its interpretation of revisions to existing law that was passed by the Georgia Legislature earlier this year.
Yesterday, September 18, President Ebersole, Dean Nettleton and others from Excelsior College presented before the Georgia Board of Nursing at its regular meeting in an attempt to seek a reversal of its action. The Board decided to take no action at the meeting and referred the issue of licensure of Excelsior graduates to its Education Committee for further study. Representatives from Excelsior College will have an opportunity to present information to the Committee at its meeting on October 3. The next step may be reconsideration by the full Board of this issue at its November meeting although this is not certain at this time.
Many Excelsior students and graduates were present at yesterday’s meeting, articulated their beliefs about the Board's action extremely well, and we are appreciative of this support. In addition, reinforcement of the College's position was received from the Georgia Nurses Association and major employers. There was local media coverage of the event as well.
We have been in discussion with members of the Governor's Staff as well as the Georgia Secretary of State and we will continue to pursue support from Georgia legislators and employers. In addition, we continue to work closely with the Georgia Nurses Association, which is an important supporter of Excelsior College, its students and graduates for many years.

We welcome your phone calls and will be prepared next week to help you consider your personal situation. If not before, you will hear from us again after the Board's Education Committee holds its meeting on October 3, 2008.
Sincerely,
M. Bridget Nettleton, PhD, RN
Dean, School of Nursing
I received that letter through email to today. I guess I can wait until for pay fees until later that's good but I hate this waiting game. I getting burnt out too. I'm losing motivation but I by reading this thread I did not know their may be another distance learning option for us ISU college. Only this I check out the website and is itjust for LPN's?? Their are alot of us that are EMT's and RT's and that is why excelsior is so appealing, but hey I might have to go get my LPN then back to RN to go the distance learning thing. I'm going to start checking that out this week. If I have to do that I'm going to have to take a break for while. The education committe is meeting next week that's good so we should know a little bit more but when they stated the next step may be reconsideration at the Nov meeting but not certain is well.....not as positive. The board needs to be reconsidering this now why keep waiting for each meeting but it gives us more time to get more people on our side.
ISU is only for LPNs. I forgot we (LPNs) weren't in this fight alone. I wish there was another alternative for Paramedics and RTs. Let's hope that they come to a resolution in October. I don't like uncertainty at all. Let's also hope and pray that they will at least decide to let all of us that are enrolled with the program to have ample time (the 7 yrs that EC allots) to complete the program and to allow those that have already completed the program to apply for licensure by endorsement as before.
here is the press release from the gbon/ec and typical, says nothing!!read and see !!
http://www.georgianurses.org/press_center.htm
when you click on the link, on the left side of the page it gives a date of the gbon meeting and the very top one dated sept 2008, does say a thing, nothing is there!
now the second one that dates sept 2008 does have an article but it is short and sweet.
check out the gna/ec presentation to the bon, especially slide 24:
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]gna's concerns re process
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d] [color=#35006d]concerns as to whether new regulations regarding
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]these graduates have been put in place by the board
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]without the benefit of public notice or comment.
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d] [color=#35006d]bon letter dated july 24, 2008: during the
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]legislative process for hb 1041 "adequate time was
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]given for public comment and input by all interested
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]parties regarding this important legislation."
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d] [color=#35006d]it is gna's position that public notice and comment
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]should have taken place before the bon developed
[color=#35006d][color=#35006d]and acted on new rules related to this statute.
you are seeing the power of your state nursing organization proactively going to bat for the nursing professionals in georgia against the state board.... each of you without being members of gna. they do so because it is in the best interest nursing and need for registered nurses in ga.
remember that any legislative law can be "corrected" or changed with introduction and passage of another bill.
take you cues from gna after their next meeting with education committee... i'd expect that meeting should be open to the public and would ask debbie if attendance would be helpful.

p.s.: in case you were not aware:
[color=#35006d]july 7, 2008
[color=#35006d]ana delegates elect officers, board members and other leaders at house of delegates meeting
...elected to serve two-year terms as officers of the board were debbie hatmaker, phd, rn, sane-a, chief programs officer, georgia nurses association, resident of bishop, ga, elected as first vice president; ...
Wow, GA is the Heart of the South too. Kind of puts a damper on this alternative. It will just be hard to move and get RN experience, or at least an inconvenience.
There are State schools doing this now, where you can do labs locally in school and/or hospital settings. Florida has at least one school now. Indiana out-of-state would just be way too high for me (no matter how much money I had!).
There sure seem to be some good grads from Excelsior, but there must be some hole in the system, or a way to cook the (grade) books. Of course, there's almost a way in most schools. It would be hard to think it was a grudge conspiracy, but it happens anywhere MONEY is involved: and the medical industry wants to hold on to what boundaries they have left from last century.
People in school will just have to do a cost benefit analysis in time and expense. The good thing if they went to a state school, is they would ace the classes and probably be honor students (and one heck of a Nurse).
Good luck to all :redbeathe
