Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of working with a recruiter and getting a package together in hopes of commissioning as a critical care nurse in the USN. I just wanted to see if any other applicants are out there!
A little about me-I only have about 7 months of RN experience in a level I ICU and my TNCC certification. Prior to getting my BSN, I served in the Air National Guard for 6 years as a 4N0 and a 4N1.
Specific questions I have:
1. Does anyone have specifics on the credentialing process? I've seen elsewhere on this forum that to become credentialed in a specialty, you only need 90 days of experience off orientation...Can anyone verify? I think the only weakness in my application would be my limited experience. I can't obtain the coveted CCRN certification until around the one year mark per the AACN's requirements.
2. My recruiter says med-surg/critical care are in high demand. Anyone out there know how many billets are available for direct accessions? My recruiter is on leave, else I'd ask him.
Thanks in advance!
I heard from my recruiter last week. He said he had good and bad news. Good news is, I was chosen by the board to be a L&D RN. Bad news is, they changed all the L&D billets to ICU (for an unknown reason) so there's no L&D openings right now. He said hopefully they'll move some things around and redistribute by May 2019. He did say there are no ODS dates available until June anyway so even if there was a spot right now I'd still have to wait until then. He also said they were going to try to work on the scrolling so that when something opens up I'll be able to fill it right away instead of waiting to be scrolled. Just though I'd give an update to anyone who might be waiting like I have been (and still am).
My package was done and when he went to submit the Program manager said no packets were being accepted. They have a huge transition at the medical facilities and when that settles they should reshuffle stuff and have openings but it won't be until next FY. A lt commander who is a division officer told me. My sister who is a corpsman has been at the medical recruiters office at San Diego and they have all said the same thing. What a mess.
Sorry to the above who were affected by the abrupt billeting changes. Fortunately for me, there still seems to be a lot of available critical care billets per my recruiter.
I am officially medically cleared, but I have no idea what is going on with credentialing. It's seriously taking forever. My recruiter said my package could still go to the board with credentialing pending, but that is contrary to everything I have heard. I suppose if there are truly no ODS spots until June, there is no rush anyway, but of course it would be nice to know sooner than later if I get selected.
Just had to vent, that's all for now!
I came across this article: Sounds like the military is handing over the reins to the Defense Health Agency. Maybe this is the reason for the billeting changes.
When did your packet go to the board? And when did they say the next ODS class was June? I was chosen as a med surg nurse (found out in October) and was told I should be in the April ODS class, hoping to go in Feb if a seat opens
My package went to the board in September or October. Just last week is when my recruiter said I had been selected and that they had no ODS openings until June. Hopefully they are planning for you to be in the February class, even if they haven't let you know that yet.

I'm not sure if I even made it to the boards! He just said CCPD committee hasn't gotten together to decide how to proceed with my package. I'll keep you guys updated.
