FY 19 Navy Nursing

Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of working with a recruiter and getting a package together in hopes of commissioning as a critical care nurse in the USN. I just wanted to see if any other applicants are out there!

A little about me-I only have about 7 months of RN experience in a level I ICU and my TNCC certification. Prior to getting my BSN, I served in the Air National Guard for 6 years as a 4N0 and a 4N1.

Specific questions I have:

1. Does anyone have specifics on the credentialing process? I've seen elsewhere on this forum that to become credentialed in a specialty, you only need 90 days of experience off orientation...Can anyone verify? I think the only weakness in my application would be my limited experience. I can't obtain the coveted CCRN certification until around the one year mark per the AACN's requirements.

2. My recruiter says med-surg/critical care are in high demand. Anyone out there know how many billets are available for direct accessions? My recruiter is on leave, else I'd ask him.

Thanks in advance!

Fully qualified/credentialed requires 1 year of full-time experience, but recruiters will often credit you with the experience that you'll attain by the time you commission (which is often about 6 more months than you have right now).

By everything I read, 90 days is the minimum experience required in any field. Also, MED/SURG is currently critical. As far as number of billets, Navy Reserve information mind you, I was told needed 50 something (MED/SURG) by the end of the year and only had 27 in process. That information was given in mid-August. Also, that certain previous requirements that were stringent has currently became flexible. I take it not for long. I am not trying to instill any sense of false hope but NOW does seem to be the time to pull the trigger. Personal note I have almost 2 years experience tele med/surg stroke floor and the last 7 mos in a level III high pt rate Trauma/ED. I would accept any position.

Thanks for the info, good luck!

Working on my fnp package right now. My recruiter is setting me up to clear meps first, then submitting the rest second because I'm prior service and imo that will be the harder part to clear. Good luck!

Sweet, good luck to you as well!

Hey there! I am currently waiting to hear back from the board to see if I am selected. I applied for Active Duty and credentialed in Med-Surg. I've been an RN for over 2 years. with 1 1/2 years in trauma/med-surg and about 8 months in critical care. its been a longgggg process and I'm just anxious to get an answer. At this point I will take any position and go anywhere they need me. I'm just ready to be a US naval nurse. does anyone know how long it takes the board to get the decision back to my recruiter? my recruiter doesn't seem to know much or at least share a lot of info with me which is frustrating. I would love to commission and go to ODS before the end of the year but from what I hear the chance is slim and I may have to wait until jan/feb.

anyways I'm done rambling. good luck to everyone who is applying!

I am also waiting to hear from the board. My kit was offically sent to them about a week ago. I have applied for active duty USN. I am credentialed in L&D. I have been a nurse for almost 8 years.

My recruiter told me I probably wouldn't hear anything until November. Last I knew they were only taking 2 L&D RNs for the entire year so I'm guessing my chances are pretty slim but fingers crossed.

I have working on getting my kit together for almost a year and a half. I had to get a medical waiver for meningitis that I had last year which took forever. My husband is active duty (enlisted) USN so we have Tricare and getting in to be cleared by a neurologist took months. I also really don't care for my recruiter so I think some of the process has been prolonged by him not exactly knowing what he is doing.

Any other L&D applicants out there?

Anyone else dual military?

Looking forward to hearing what/when everyone finds out.

@gabby_101 I can totally relate to your recruiter not being proactive. mine has messed up and prolonged my application process. I was supposed to go to ODS in august then it got pushed back and he didn't even submit my application until august so I had to wait for the September board to meet. so now hopefully I hear something soon since they met last week. hoping there are med-surg spots available and I can go to ODS asap

Hello. Anyone have info on Perioperative nursing needs in the Naval Reserves for 2019? I submitted but my recruiter said it can take til the end of September to hear. Thanks

When was your application submitted, I'm not sure about reserves though

Anyone know how long it takes for the board to give you an answer?? It's been about 2 weeks since my application was supposed to be reviewed
