I kept forgetting that my student wasn't a Tele nurse orientee. I dragged her up to the monitors because one of the Remote Tele patients was having runs of VTach.
"See, this? It's bad because the patient can go into VFib."
Student naively says, "So, then you call the doctor?"
Monitor tech and I answered at the same time: "No, that's when we'd call a Code."
I had a nursing student following me when one of my patients started to decompensate--I told the student, "OK, we'll need a blood gas kit--they're in the clean utility on the third shelf." She said OK and went off to get it. A minute or two later the NA came and told me that my student was in the clean utility, busy looking for a blood gasket.

I was a unit secretary at a pediatric hospital and I had a first year med student walk up to me and ask "What are the normal vital signs?" I asked "For this patient?" He said "No, in general." He was absolutely serious.
One of the fellows was standing behind him, and boy, did he get reamed!
i have a 36 yo very naieve sister, who is a cna. she loves what she does; er mostly. she told me once.quote: ya know, i'm a virgin and shouldn't have to wash those men's private parts.
she has entertained me over the years with such remarks as these, and when she's around, i don't need a comedian. the best part is, she doesn't realize she's saying anything funny. i love her to pieces.
do you have anything to share about things you have heard from naieve medical personnel? if so, would you care to share?

I had to explain to a pediatric INTERN once (in December, no less) what the difference between pre and post ductal saturations was and why we cared about them in a day-old baby with pulmonary hypertension. I told his fellow on him.
