i have a 36 yo very naieve sister, who is a cna. she loves what she does; er mostly. she told me once.
quote: ya know, i'm a virgin and shouldn't have to wash those men's private parts.
she has entertained me over the years with such remarks as these, and when she's around, i don't need a comedian. the best part is, she doesn't realize she's saying anything funny. i love her to pieces.
do you have anything to share about things you have heard from naieve medical personnel? if so, would you care to share?
My son is a "special needs" young adult. He has a girlfriend (also special needs) and has decided that having a baby would probably be a bad idea for the 2 of them, so he wants to get a vasectomy. He gave me this news flash and then said: "But, Mom! When you get a vasectomy, what do they cut off?"
(I explained)
It never amazes me just how ignorant some people can be.... During a discussion about the benefits of breast-feeding babies, i shared with my co-worker that i breast fed my son until he started to "cut teeth". After making this statement, my co-worker stared at me with a blank expression. (I'm a black woman and my co-worker is white). She then looks at me with wild-eyed amazement and asked me if my milk came out brown:uhoh3::uhoh3:
I had an intern write this as discharge instructions for a debridement/suture for an arm laceration:
Return to ER for redness, swelling, or pu$$y drainage.
Thank goodness I reviewed it before going over it with the patient. I handed it back to him and asked him to read it...Poor thing almost died on the spot! We decided that "drainage" or "pus-like drainage" would get the message across. :wink2:
Funny thing I heard once..." I went to university, I didn't train to make beds!" She was serious!! EH....Ok princess, heres a sheet..learn fast!:icon_roll
This was a BIG issue for my school. We're the only university in town, but there are a few other schools with BSN programs. All the others are ADN programs.
There is this false belief by some individuals that, if you hire anyone from our university, they won't want to make beds or wipe butts. Our instructors (lecture & clinical) made it VERY clear to us that we should learn and know how to perform these tasks, and know them well, because BSN, ADN, RN, LPN, or CNA, we're all nurses and are expected to assist in patient care in any way possible!
I was proud to have learned that, and I always offer to assist my CNAs -- or do it myself if they're not around / busy with another patient.
Though this isn't about medically naive stuff, it certainly belongs in the naive category!! When I was in my last semester of nursing school (in a big city) I had a clinical rotation in a Catholic mental health facility. I was there one day with a classmate who was from a very small town. The charge nurse asked both of us if we would like to go to the Chapel before report started as it was Ash Wednesday.
My classmate declined, and the charge nurse looked over at me. I declined as well, and this classmate bursts out with, "Well, Duh! She's not Catholic, She's Oriental!!!" Um, yeah, did I mention I'm the first Asian this girl had ever met? And it was our last semester in school...
The charge nurse was speechless and I tried to hold back the laughter myself.

Thank you. Nothing like a lecture to bring a thread to a grinding halt. Personally, I'd send a pm to a fellow nurse (if I felt it was my place to do so), rather than call her out publically and possibly embarrass her. But I'll do it your way this time. :wink2:
I once had a CNA argue with me, in all earnestness, that women urinate from their lady partss. I got out a flippin' anatomy book and proved my case, but she still didn't believe me.
I also had a new nurse tell me that Lasix would only cause her CHF patient more distress. She was under the impression that Lasix 'drew water TO the lungs'. ??? I went to answer a call light while she called the doc. She looked sheepish the rest of the night.
