Funny/happy NICU moments needed

Specialties NICU

:scrying: After a wonderful 6 months maternity leave home with my girls, I'm headed back to the NICU and I need some encouragement. Help me remember WHY I love my job despite the horrendous hours.

OH, and my fridge died so 3/4 of my frozen milk supply was thawed:( and therefore ruined.

Need funny NICU moments to cheer me up! Thanks!

obviously its sad if u dont give the baby a paci---thats not what i meant. i meant that havent u ever checked on ur kiddo...the paci that was in has been spit out...and u now glance over to see ur kid sucking on the ET tube. i think its cute. (then u replace the much needed paci haha)

Plus, it's not always easy to get that pacifier in there with the ET tube.

We had a baby in the unit about a year or so ago, I think he was 26 weeks. He was up for a visit the other day (looking fantastic, giving everyone this drooly grin), and his mom has gone back to school to be a nurse. She was telling us that she wants to work with us someday. Not only did we save her baby's life, but we inspired her to become a NICU nurse. Isn't that neat?

Exactly--that is so true! and half the time if they have an ET tube they are sedated so they really cant hold the pasi in there very well! poor kiddos...

preemieRNkate--i also love that story about the mom wanting to be a NICU nurse...i have seen a few moms and even siblings that have had the same effect!

i totally agree with you two. my sister and i were both born about 4 weeks early. i was 5 lbs and my sister about 4. that was were she was diagnosed with tetralogy of fallot. but anyways sorry bout the rant. for some odd reason i have always wanted to be a nicu nurse. what 8th grader stands up during class and says that they want to be a nicu nurse and have the teacher look at you funny. i feel as tho i have a connection becuase of my sister.

sorry about hijacking the thread. i respect every single one of you nicu nurse. i am jealous and envious in a good way. thank you for what you do all of you are heros to me. :nuke:

I took care of this 34 weeker tonight for a few hours and then switched assignments at 2300 to get my primary. I told the next nurse that this particular baby needed to poop - it had almost been 3 days! The baby was on all formula, and was going home in a day or two so they didn't want her getting any help to poop.

Well...

That nurse called me in there the next time that baby was due to eat... the baby had a poop explosion! It had exploded out her diaper - through her outfit, through the blanket she was wrapped in, and onto her bedding. It was up to her shoulder blades! She had to give her a bath to clean her up! It's been a long time since I've laughed that hard (especially over poop!)

I just love it when they "save up"!

Not so funny at the time, but pretty good now:

Sometimes they're pretty skilled at "undressing" as well. You know the conversation is about to go downhill when the PCA asks, "Eric, is your baby supposed to be wearing a diaper?"

I know.... even if you got it on snug, they manage to wriggle out of it so it's around their knees, and your nice, clean bed has a nice wet spot on it. And the baby's finally asleep when you discover this... (or it's shift change, and day shift can't change a blanket ;>P)

Or not even around their knees, but on the other end of the isolette. Some of those kiddos need diapers with suspenders.

These stories are so cute! I can't wait to start in the NICU (orientation June 26) so I can share my own stories here.:yeah:
