Funny/happy NICU moments needed

:scrying: After a wonderful 6 months maternity leave home with my girls, I'm headed back to the NICU and I need some encouragement. Help me remember WHY I love my job despite the horrendous hours.

OH, and my fridge died so 3/4 of my frozen milk supply was thawed:( and therefore ruined.

Need funny NICU moments to cheer me up! Thanks!

my favorite moment:

i had 26 wk twins who went through the typical preemie course. twin a was a rock star and had already been discharged but twin b was still working on PO feeds. man, was he frustrating! he would always wake up 5-10 minutes before i was ready, screaming his head off for a bottle. the second the milk splashes in his mouth, nothing. no suck, no cry, no nothing. he would just stare at me like i was some crazy woman, or as if i had offended him in some way. i would sit with him for 30 minutes trying every trick in the book (including begging and bribing :p)... and he'd take 5 mls. maybe.

just when i'd get fed up and threaten to never PO him again, he'd give me this sly little smile and then doze off. talk about melting your heart...

ok, you win. we'll try again next feed.

Picking up the little T21/CAVC who's going to foster care and has been screaming her head off in that stridorous little birdy cry the Downs kids have, and she stops crying and just looks up at you with those funny little eyes and for a split second you seriously ponder asking the nursing supervisor if you can take her home.

And then you remember that you've killed every houseplant you've ever owned, and think better of it.

If I can just add my 2 cents...

I am not a NICU nurse, in fact I just graduated in May from Nursing School - yipee, and am just waiting for the results of my NCLEX (which I took on Friday) - yikes! However, I have much experience with NICU nurses and would love to tell you why you are the most important people in my eyes.

I gave birth to 24 1/2 week twins almost 8 years ago now. They were 832 and 840 grams. They spent almost 4 months in the NICU and came home on Christmas Eve (the best Christmas ever). During their stay they went through many ups and downs, one crashed the first night ended up with 2 chest tubes, needed blood, no good. I'll never forget the helpless feeling of being able to do nothing except sit quietly by the bedside in fear of overstimulating their little bodies. You know what got me through those tough times - the nurses. They were my angels, the surrogate moms for my boys when I had to go home and get some rest. They stuck up for my boys and alerted the doctors when things started to go wrong. Each of my boys had a few primary nurses who just adored them. I would come into the unit and watch as the nurse would be lovingly holding one of my sons, brushing what little hair he had with the scrub brush. It was hard to walk out of that unit each day, but the pain was made easier knowing that they were in the best hands possible.

I went to nursing school because of the impact the nurses had on me. My hats off to NICU nurses who take care of our tiny miracles and whose gentle hands and hearts love our babies.

YOU ROCK!!!

BTW - my sons are beautiful, healthy, and miracles. No probs with the eyes, lungs, you name it. They even have round heads! You'd never know they were preemies :-)

Was taking care of a stable Level II kiddo when his mom and big brother (6 years old, fmr 32 wkr and a graduate of our unit) arrived to visit.

Mom had pumped some milk and brought it to us. When I mentioned that I would warm it up for the baby's next feeding, big brother walks up to me, eyeing the milk with a very serious expression (not a look of "oh gross" but a look of genuine concern) and says, "Sir... do you know where she GOT that?"

Nurses aren't happy when you poop (esp if you don't wait til the diaper's on) and they aren't happy when you don't poop. If you don't poop, we'll help you to see the error of your ways. And then we'll be unhappy about the mess we helped you make.

Basically, baby, you can't win!!! :D :lol: :1luvu:
