Funny dreams about your job as a nurse

Nurses Humor

I dreamed one night that I was in charge and this one lady patient we had was dying. Her dx? "Chinese Toe Disease". Anyway, I dreamed her toes all fell off and she died. I called the doctor to report it and told him her toes had all fallen off...the doctor said "There's no bringing them back when the toes go" and so I proceeded to call the funeral home. I put her toes in a baggie and ran after the heorifice because the coroner had forgotten to take her toes.

Another dream: I dreamed the 2 halls of patients we had were fighting with each other over which batteries were the best: Energizer or Duracell.

Tell me your funny dreams!

:chuckle ROTFLOL This is soooo funny. I can relate to the sleep talker-walker. Same here.. I am always rushing at a long term facility I once worked at. The bells are going off, residents are crying (along with ME) and I am catching heck for not getting my work done faster. Then I wake up...:cry::imbar:eek:

I have had more dreams than I can count about work.... and they are always vivid....

...from dreaming that I'm at work and telling a co-worker that I had that night off and wouldn't see her in a couple nights...waking up...having to go to work...meeting her in the elevator before the shift started...and telling her about the dream...

...having a dream that the alzheimers guy in room 213 is your grandpa walking in his walker in the middle of forrest...(who looks nothing like my actual grandfather)

...dreaming of the never ending call lights...

...having a dream that my best friend's daughter is a diabetic...checking her blood sugar...finding that its 92...waking up...and asking..."OMG...is your daughter diabetic because I had the strangest dream...."

...dreaming that I am at a strange facility to have another facility call me to tell me that I don't have to be there until 5 am...then wake up...and am not sure which facility I have to be at....so I have to call my work to find out where I am actually supossed to be...(this has actually happened)

{I work for a staffing company...so I never know which facility I am supposed to be at...}

I have had some really weird dreams since becoming a nurse. Most of them are the really vivid type after a particularly intense shift.

I have woken myself and my fiancee up if it is a true nightmare. I frequently wake up on my days off (I work 3-11pm) after the start of shift, thinking I have overslept for work, and it is only after waking up that I realize I am off that day.

I also have dreams where I have been called to the managers office because I have really screwed up (med error, etc.), and wake up so disoriented that I believe it has actually happened, until I realize I am in my bed.

Just goes to show, we care about our patients, and we are stressed out due to overwork.

I hear vent and monitor alarms in my sleep. I also hear call lights and IV pumps too. I sometimes wake up after that realize I am at home and go back to sleep. Sometimes I actually get out of bed and then realize I am at home.

I'm glad someone started this thread.

My first week as a nurse I dreamed that my med cart was possessed by the devil and was chasing me around the facility.

I dreamed I had a foley in my bathtub drain. It was patent and draining clear yellow urine. I pulled it out and a quilt that I had as a child was attached to the tip.

I dreamed I was passing meds, I went through all my patients and gave them all a pink pill out of the OTC drawer, at the end of shift I realized the pills were MS Contin.

I dreamed that I got to work and couldn't find my cart. I kept asking our maintance guy where it was and he wouldn't tell me. I was running around in a panic because it was getting late and I was behind in my med pass. I finally found it out by the dumpster but it wouldn't fit in the door to get back into the building. In the dream I said "well, that's it. I can't pass meds so I'm just going to go home."

I have had many dreams where I'm trying to pass meds and I'm so exhausted because I haven't slept in days that I keep falling asleep while I'm putting meds in through a g-tube.

I hope I haven't posted this several times. I'm half asleep right now and keep hitting the wrong buttons.

That reminds me of when I was first an LPN...they put me on meds one day and one of my residents thought I was a bartender and that the med cart was a portable bar. He actually asked me for a Fuzzy Naval and so I gave him a glass of OJ and he drank it and then started acting tipsy...I swear it was just OJ though!

Then, when I was working in the Alzheimer's Unit, I had this one little lady who came from a very well-to-do family and used to have a glass of wine with her meals. We gave her 3 cups of plain grape juice one evening, and she started stumbling around and slurring her words as if drunk. We knew what she was doing and she was okay...by that, I mean she wasn't sick or stroking out on us or anything. I used to have to give her those long red fluid filled Colace (does anyone here remember those?) and one time I had some Hot Tamale candy and tried to give her one and I guess she thought it was that Colace and wouldn't take it.

Granted, those weren't dreams...but still funny.

One of my most vivid: This was a few years ago when I was a brand new med-surg nurse. I dreamed our charge nurse let me know I was getting an admit, and the patient was already in the room. I walked into the room and found writhing in the bed a very large, bright red Chinese dragon, just like the ones on placemats and take-out menus. It had smoke coming out of its nostrils. I turned out of the room and told my charge I couldn't take the assignment. She replied, "now, we don't discriminate here." I answered, "but its a F***ing DRAGON and I have no training for that!" Now, in real life this charge is very knowledgeable and well respected, but kind of uptight. I told her about this dream, and she actually laughed, not her usual delicate giggle but a real guffaw. I had never seen her do that before, and she has always been less uptight with me since.

not funny, but a wake up call....

been pretty run down at work of late, and havent had leave in 14 months( manager keeps giving excuses about training etc, notenoughregular staff in the unit and all that crap, and studying n workign full time etc...... last week i dreamt that one of our patients( a vent dependent Quad) who has been with us for months on end tried to strangle me using IV tubing, but was i panicking that someone is trying to kill me, hell nooo, i was so excited that all i could say was " yes yes finally i go on workers compensation, stress leave, "

needless to say i spoke to the unit manager and explained to her that i really need time off before i lose my mind... got two weeks off coming n am going to Vietnam...

I am a new grad nurse and working for about 3 months now...

One of the recurring dreams I had happened twice already while I was sleeping the first one happened during my practicum while the second happened just yesterday.. in both dreams I was in the same situation responding to a code blue..

in my dream, I went to my pt room, do nursing stuff with them, then they just spontaneously coded on me somehow... called a code blue, shouted for help and I just jumped right on top of my patient doing chest compressions...

at this time, subconsciously , I could feel my own heart thumping and going tachy because of the adrenaline during the code. While lying on bed my shoulder would just start twitching while in my dream I was imagining doing compressions... after a few twitches, i would just wake up in the middle of the night sweating...

I worked in a group home in college and worked at least one night shift a week. I usually did not sleep very well the next morning because I always had roommates or went back to my parents' house.

I had a recurring dream that I'd taken one of the residents home with me "for the day" but that either my mom or a roommate was going to be taking care of them while I was asleep. I'd go in and out of consciousness and have thoughts like "I have to remember to tell my mom that ____ needs to be repositioned at 10" or "Crap! I forgot to bring the feeding pump with me!"

I dreamed a couple years ago when we sold our first house, that the lady we sold it to converted the living room and had a huge bedside commode right in the middle of the floor. It was shiny and gold and looked like a trophy.

When I was new and more stressed out than I am now I would dream almost everything that I was still at work. I would wake up at midnight get out of bed and freak out that I hadn't done vitals since 1900!!! And then realize and go back to sleep. I would get all concerned that I was laying in my patient's bed with my patient (eww!!) while I was sleeping, and had to wake up and look around the room to make sure I wasn't. One time I rolled over in my sleep and loudly woke up hubby with "Are you taking care of this patient too??!!" all upset that charge had assigned two nurses (not that that situation Never happens irl, but still) he woke up and says "What did you just say?" I realized immediately that I was talking in my sleep so I tried to cover it up with "Ohh... nothing, You're dreaming, go back to sleep" Which he didn't buy at all, so I had to tell him about the dream, we laughed so hard I cried!
